Update of 3 Oct 2006: William Prentice is the son of James Henry Prentice of Banham, Norfolk who is discussed in our Fall 2000 issue. The information in this article has now been placed in that other article.
1. William Prentice was b. c. 1816 in Banham, Norfolk, England. He appears in the 1851 and 1861 census in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, with his wife, Elizabeth/Betsey, b. c. 1825, Littleport. William is not in the 1871 census and his wife is shown as a widow and head of the family. Elizabeth heads the family in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Littleport census. Children:
- Ann Prentice, b. c. 1844, Littleport. Living at home in the 1871 Littleport census and called "Ann Provost" but no husband is shown.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1847, Littleport. Not in 1871 census. He may, or may not, be the William Prentice shown in the 1891 census as b. c. 1845, Cares, Littleport, and unmarried.
- Rebecca Prentice, b. c. 1850-51, Littleport. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Harry Prentice, b. c. 1858, Littleport. At home in 1871. In the 1881 census he is a Boarder at Welches-Dam, Cambridgeshire. Not in 1891 or 1901 census.
- Elizabeth/Betsey Prentice, b. c. 1860, Littleport. At home in 1871.
- John Prentice, b. c. 1863, Littleport. At home in 1871. In 1891 census in Otley, Yorkshire, he is a Boarder. Not in 1901 census.
- David Prentice, b. c. 1865, Littleport. At home in 1871. At home in 1881, but there called a "grandson" of Elizabeth. Not in 1891 or 1901 census.
- George Prentice, b. c. 1868, Littleport. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
2. Rebecca Prentice, b. c. 1850-51, Littleport. In the 1881 census she is shown as the wife of Eldred Prentice (b. c. 1854, Bursto, Norfolk) and living in Kingston-Upon_Hull, Yorkshire. They appear in the 1891 census in Newington, Yorkshire, with their daughter:
- Elsie M. Prentice, b. c. 1882, Hull, Yorkshire. At home in 1891.
Also shown living with Elizabeth's family in the 1871 census is 3. George Prentice, b. c. 1868, Littleport. At home in 1871. At home in 1881, but there called a "grandson" of Elizabeth. He appears in the 1891 Camberwell, London, census with his wife, Mary E., b. c. 1866, Chelmsford, Essex. No children shown.
George appears in the 1901 census in Newington, London, with his (2nd) wife, Fanny B., b. c. 1873, Lambeth, London, Middlesex and children:
