Thomas Prentice of Hamilton and E. Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2006 and Revised: 26 Oct 2014

Introduction: We are helping Judith (Prentice) Crociati of Plymouth, MA, Barbara Prentice in researching their Prentice roots in Scotland. Additional information has been provided by James Bell whose grandfather's sister, Margaret Bell, m. Thomas Prentice (b. 1860, #3, below).

This article originally appeared in our Summer 2003 Prentice Newsletter entitled Thomas Prentice of Hamilton and E. Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland . To that article we have added substantial new information about descendants. Our updated article is based on correspondence with Judith (Prentice) Crociati, Barbara Prentice, Christine Hadden, the SSDI and 1930 census information.

1.2 Janet Prentice, chr. 25 Sep 1842. East Kilbride. At home in 1861. In the 1871 census she was a Dairymaid in the home of William Struthers in East Kilbride.

She m. William Struthers on 28 Dec 1871 at West End Farm in East Kilbride per IGI. Janet's place of residence was given as West End Farm, which suggests that her parents may have owned or leased the farm. William Struthers was a son of Robert Struthers and Sarah Wilson and was b. c. 1837, probably at Side Farm in Avondale, Lanarkshire. At the time of his marriage, William was resident at Glenaven Farm, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. The 1881 census shows them living at Hill of Auchronie Farm, Kinellar, Aberdeenshire (per Robert Struthers, email, 30 Jan 2003). 1891 census in Ayr, Arshire. 1901 census in Maybole, Ayrshire. 1.3 Mary/Marion Prentice, b. 10 Mar 1844 and chr. 7 Apr 1844, E. Kilbride, Lanarkshire. At home in 1861. She d. 11 am on 17 Nov 1882 at Westfield Farm, age 37 and just a year after the birth of her 7th child, Robert. Ref: James Bell, email, 25 Mar 2009:

According to the 1871 Census, aged 25, she was working as a dairymaid at “Craigthorn Hill Farm”, just north-east of Glassford. She and three others were employed by Thomas Bell, aged 33. The census was taken on the 3rd April.

She m. Thomas Bell on 6 Jun 1871 at her parents’ home, Westend Farm, on the outskirts of Jackton, East Kilbride. Mary’s sister Margaret Prentice was one witness; Thomas’ brother, George Bell, was the other. (Interestingly George Bell was managing Newhouse Farm, just next door to Westend Farm. It is probable that Mary first met Thomas when he was visiting his brother here. About 1878 or 1879, Mary and Thomas moved to a new farm, Westfield Farm at Mearns in Renfrewshire. This place shouldn’t be confused with “Westend” where Mary’s parents were living. Mearns was some miles north-west of Westend.

The census of 1881 describes that Thomas Bell was a “Farmer of 94 acres, 80 of which are arable, employing 1 man and two girls.” So this was a sizeable farm to be managed and Thomas was now left with a family of seven young ones to care for as well. We would imagine that he might have called on family to help, but his three sisters were all married by this time and had families of their own. His mother had died in 1877.) So perhaps Thomas employed a live-in nurse or care-giver provide for the needs of the young ones.

Thomas m. 2nd Elizabeth Orr on 12 Sep 1884, not quite 2 years after his 1st wife died. Elizabeth was b. c. 1846, a 38 year old spinster living at Almada St, Hamilton, a town to the east of East Kilbride. The marriage was an “Irregular Marriage”, meaning it was not a marriage administered by the church with the reading of banns and so on. In a way it was an early form of “civil” marriage and it was not at all uncommon, particularly in the District of Blysthwood, Glasgow where Thomas’ second marriage took place.

Shortly thereafter, the arrived in New York, USA, on 20 Oct 1884, aboard the "SS Ethiopia" which had sailed out of Glasgow, then settled in Asheville, Buncombe Co., NC, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the home of the Biltmore Estate erected by the Vanderbilts.

By the time of the 1900 census, Thomas Bell Sr. and his oldest son, John, had died. The 1900 census shows Elizabeth (Prentice) Bell as the head of the family and they were living in North Carolina, in Buncombe County, on the outskirts of the town of Asheville at a place called Haw Creek.

The 1900 census tells us that Elizabeth owned her own house and was a “farmer”. Thomas (27) and James (20) were “farm labourers”. Marion (25) Eliza (23) and Mary (21) were still single and no doubt running the house. Young Robert was 18. (In Scotland the Bells had been dairy farmers, so perhaps they did the same in North Carolina. Apples were widely grown in the area so it is also possible they may have worked orchards.)

The 1910 census records that the children had begun to head off and make their own way. At home at Haw Creek were Elizabeth (Head) aged 62, occupation – “farmer” with Mary (32), James (30) and Robert (25). Thomas, Marion and Eliza were elsewhere.

The 1920 census does not appear and may by then be deceased. She would have been between 62 and 72 years of age. Three of the siblings, Eliza (41), Mary (40) and James (37) were living together at “Broadway Ave, Asheville Township”. James is described as a “farm manager”.

In 1930 Mary (50) and James (49) (now a “Farm Superintendant”) were still living at Broadway Avenue.

Note: By email of 29 Jan 2006, Marlene Hogg wrote that she met Thomas, b. 1886 about 30 years ago. He and my father-in-law were from the same area in Scotland and as the story goes they went to the same school in the town of "Gatehouse of Fleet" county of Kircudbright. He had two sons, John and Thomas and a daughter Mary. They had a very successful dairy farm in a lovely setting in Plymouth. When they went out of business in the late 60's, my husband went to the auction and purchased a lot of the farm equipment. Actually, I was able to salvage an old fitting chest that they used to take to fairs. I refinished it and it sits in my living room. The daughter Mary died not too long ago. She was in her 90's.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

Who are John Prentice's parents? It may be reasonable to assume that John Prentice was somewhere between the age of 20 and 28 when he m. in 1795. That would give him a birth year range of 1767 and 1775. We reviewed Glasgow Records and find the following christenings in Lanarkshire during that period:

  1. John Prentice was chr. 12 Apr 1767, son of James Prentice and Jean Smellie, Cambusnethan.
  2. John Prentice was chr. 8 Nov 1768, son of James Prentice and Margaret Wilson, Carnwath.
  3. John Prentice, chr. 25 Dec 1770, son of John Prentice and Euphemia Scott, Carluke.
  4. John Prentice, chr. 12 May 1776, son of James Prentice and Margaret Meikle, Carnwath.

The earliest John Prentice before 1767 was John Prentice who was chr. 12 Feb 1764, son of John Prentice and Margaret Brownlee of Carluke, which would have made him about 31 in 1795. His age in 1795 would seem to make it unlikely that he m. Janet Crain in 1795.

The next John Prentice shown in Glasgow Records after 1776 was chr. 1780, Lanark, and he would have been only 15 in 1795. A 1795 marriage at 15 is unlikely.
