Solomon Prentice of MA and Nelson, Portage Co., OH

Solomon Prentice, Nelson, Portage Co., OH
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2006 and Revised 18 Aug 2015

We are attempting to identify the parents of Solomon Prentiss. We had thought that he might be the Solomon Prentice who was born 6 May 1781 and who appears as #57iv in our 1996 PRENTICE book, but the DAR records for that person show that he was married to a different person. Here is what we have so far:

    1. Salmon/Solomon[1] Prentice was shown in the 1850 census sheet, dated 31 Oct 1850, as age 68 years. We tentatively assume that to mean that as of that date he was then 68 and had not yet turned 69, which would mean he was b. on or before 31 Oct 1782. He could, however, theoretically, turn 69 as soon as the next day, 1 Nov 1850.

A photo of his headstone provided in Susan Irby's email of 19 May 2007, shows his death date as 13 Nov 1851 at age 68. That date, however, is year and 13 days after the 31 Oct 1850 census record which also shows his age as 68. He couldn't have been 68 on both dates, so he was either 67 on the earlier 1850 date, or 69 on the later 1851 date.

He was b. in MA (per 1850 census) and d. 13 Nov 1851, age 68. He is bur. on the farm of his son, Ebenezer.

He is probably the same person who was from Chatauqua Co., NY and purchased land in Kalamazoo Co., MI in 1838.

He married, first, Edna Sweet, 22 Sep 1803, in 1st Presb. Ch., Cazenovia, Madison, NY [4]. 1850 Nelson, Portage, OH calls her Maria and says she was then 55 (b. c. 1795). However she would be too young to be the mother of all of the children so Maria may be a second wife. Children:

    1. (maybe dau.) Almira [2] Prentice. Born, circa 1803 [5]. She m. Levi Goldsborough, 3 Oct 1828. Living Otto, Cattaraugus Co., NY in census of 1830, 1840 and 1850. Children::

"EBENEZER T. PRENTICE, farmer, P.O. Nelson, was born in Onondaga County, N.Y. November 29, 1811, son of Salmon and Edna (Sweet) Prentice, also natives of the above county and State, and who were the parents of eight children, of whom Ebenezer T. is the sixth. Our subject was married in Chautauqua County, N.Y., June 15, 1836, to Sarah Vallance, born October 9, 1817, in Duchess County, N.Y. By this union there are five children: Samuel, Byron, Charles, Cyrus and Eri (latter deceased).

A portion of Theron's obituary reads as follows:

While a young man he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1879, he, with his wife, joined the Free Methodist church, of which he had remained a fiathful member until death. Ten years ago he moved with his family to Salem, Oregon, where he had since resided. He died Friday evening, January 12, at his home.

A faithful husband, and a tender father, a consistent Christian has gone to his abundant reward. Brother Burr was a man of sterling quality, known in the business world for his ability and christian integrity, loved and revered by all who knew him. Who are Salmon/Solomon Prentice's Parents?

Since Salmon/Solomon (abbrev. that name as "SS") swas born in MA c. 1782, we thought we would check the 1790 census to see the names of the heads of household shown. Families quite often name a son after a father. With thought, and since we only have 2 names to work with, we decided to check those: (1) Salmon/Solomon, and (2) his son, Ebenezer.

    We found the following:

    1. Ebn Prentice of Cambridge, Middlesex, MA, had 1 male under 16.
    2. Ebnr Prentice of Cambridge, Middlexex, MA, had 1 male under 16.
    3. Solomon Prentice of Cambridge, Middlesex, MA, had 5 males under 16.
    4. Solomon Prentice of Watertown, Middlesex, MA, had 1 male under 16.

Those 8 males under 16 may, or may not, be sons and may, or may not, be SS still living in MA in 1790.

In 1800, Salmon/Solomon would have been 18, probably still at home. The 1800 census does not show place of birth, but does show place of residence. A census check shows the following results for those head of household surnames:

    1. No Ebenezers living in MA in 1800 census.
    2. 1 Solomon Prentice of Cambridge, MA, but did not have a son in the 18 year range.
    3. No Ebenezer or Solomon/Salmon in NY.
    4. No Ebenezer or Solomon/Salmon in NH or VT.

From that it looks like the family was apparently missed in the 1800 census.. By the 1810 census the 1782 Salmon/Solomon would have been 28, so the 1810 would not have been helpful in identifying his father since he was likely married by then.

We do know that the 1782 Salmon/Solomon by 1810 was living at various places in NY by looking at the birth places of his children: .His apparent son, #2, was b, c. 1810 in Madison Co., NY. Son #3, Ebenezer, was b. 1811 in Onondaga Co., NY. Daughter #4, was b. 1816 in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY. Those moves by his children give us the following moves:

    1. 1810 in Madison Co., NY.
    2. 1811 in Onondaga Co., NY.
    3. 1816 in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY.

    Investigation continues.
