1. Lewis Prentiss was b. c. 1856 in Belgium (Holland?). He appears at age 24 in the 1880 census as a Painter in Grand Rapids, MI, with his wife and son.
He m. Lydia, b. c. 1844, OH. Not in 1900 census. Son:
- Clinton Prentiss, b. c. 1866, PA. Although called a son in the census, he may be a son of Lydia, 12 years older than Lewis, who has adopted the Prentiss surname.
Neither Lewis nor Clinton appear in the 1900 or 1920 census.
Although a guess for now, Lewis Prentice might be the son of widowed Hannah Prentice, b. c. 1831, Holland, as were her parents, who also appears in the 1880 Grand Rapids, Kent, MI, census as b. c. 1831, Holland, with her sons:
- Herman Prentice, b. c. 1859, Holland. At home in 1880 in Grand Rapids. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
- Frank Prentice, b. c. 1860, Holland. At home in 1880 in Grand Rapids. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
- Nely Prentice, son, b. c. 1866, Holland. At home in 1880 in Grand Rapids. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
The 1880 census also indicates that Hannah Prentice's husband was also b. in Holland.
Finally, Hannah Prentice may be the daughter of Martin Van Nest (b. c. 1807, Holland) and his wife, Joppe Van Nest (b. c. 1813, Holland) who also appear in the 1880 Grand Rapids census living only 2 houses away from Hannah.
