1. John Prentiss was b. c. 1815, PA. 1850 census in Southwark Ward 3, Philadelphia Co., PA. 1860 census in Lincoln, Middlesex Co., MA. Not in 1870 census and may be deceased as his wife is living with Joseph F. Bemis, perhaps a brother..
He m. Ellen Bemis on 10 Nov 1835 in Philadelphia, PA (per Marriage Index). She was b. 1 May 1816 in Lincoln, Middlesex Co., MA, and d. 10 May 1892. She was one of the 11 children of Amos Bemis and Susan Fiske of Lincoln, Middlesex Co., MA. 1870 census in Lincoln, Middlesex Co., MA, living with Joseph Bemis, perhaps a brother, and her children. 1880 Lincoln census called a widow and living with her brother George F. Bemis. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com . Children:
- Anna "Annie" M. Prentiss, b. 30 May 1840 PA. She m. Joseph Wilkins on 8 May 1862. He was b. c. 1836.
They appear in the 1880 census in Philadelphia, PA as "Jos." and "Annie M." Wilkins. They later
appear in the 1900 Philadelphia census with no children at home. Children per 1880 census:
- Walter P. Wilkins, b. c. 1863
- Ella B. Wilkins, b. c. 1865
- Joseph Wilkins Jr., b. c. 1872
- Arthur Wilkins, b. c. 1875
- John Prentiss, b. 22 Jul 1842. At home in 1850. Not in 1870 or 1880 census.
- Joseph Prentiss, b. 25 Jul 1844 and d. 3 mos. later on 25 Oct 1844.
- Ellen B. (Bemis?) Prentiss, b. 18 Oct 1845, PA. At home in 1850, 1870 and 1880.
- Caroline "Carrie" Prentiss, b. c. 1849, PA. At home in 1860, 1870 and 1880 census.
- Franklin Bemis Prentiss, b. 14 Jan 1852, Lincoln, Middlesex Co., MA. At home in 1860 census. He m. Anna M. Piper on 3 Apr 1895. Not in 1900, 1910 or 1920 census.
He appears as John Prentis in the 1850 census in Southwark Ward 3, Philadelphia Co.,PA. Note the different surname spelling.
The "Prentis" surname spelling, suggests he may be the son of John Prentis (b. c. 1788, England) and his wife, Maria (b. c. 1797, England) who appear in the same 1850 census in Southwark Ward 3.
