Update of 29 May 2006: James Isaac Prentice is the son of William Prentice and Eliza Tailer who are #16a(iii) in our Fall 2000 article about the Prentices of Palgrave, England .
We found the following information in the 1841, 1861, 1881 and 1891 census in England:
1. James Isaac Prentice was b. c. 1826 in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England. He first appears in the 1841 census, age 15, apparently as a farm laborer, but without his parents. He does not appear in the 1851 census. He does appear in the later 1861 census with his wife, Mary Ann, b. c. 1829, Braintree, Essex. Still later, he appears in the 1891 census in Stowmarket, Suffolk, as James L. Prentice, with his wife, but no children are shown at home. Son per 1881 census:
- James C. Prentice, b. c. 1853, Bristol, Gloucestershire. . . . . . . . . [2]
2. James C. Prentice, was b. c. 1853 in Maryleport, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. He appears in the 1881 census living in Whitchurch, Somerset, England, as a Provision and Tea Dealer, with his wife, Charlotte M. (Trapnell?), b. c. 1852, Whitchurch, and children:
- Mariam M. Prentice, b. c. 1878, Keynsham, Somerset, England
- Harold J. Prentice, b. c. 1880, Keynsham, Somerset, England
Also living with James and his family was Charlotte Trapnell, b. c. 1832, Rudghill, Somerset, England, and called Mother In Law, and Mary Lucy Day, age 17, a cook and domestic servant.
