In reviewing English census records, we found the following family:
1. Edward Prentis was b. c. 1818 in Rochester, Kent, England. He appears in the 1851 census in Kensington, Middlesex, with his wife and family. Edward d. before 1866 (per obit. of his son, Lewis) and does not appear in the 1861 and later census records.
He m. Sarah, b. c. 1802, Wemanton, Somerset. The 1851 census shows the following children, but it is obvious that they cannot all be Edward's children since was only about 10 years old when the first child was born. Either:
- some of them are Sarah's marriage by a prior marriage and adopted by Edward, or
- the census errs in calling Edward her husband since she is 16 years older than Edward and he might, in fact, be Sarah's oldest child.
Children shown in the 1851 census:
- Sarah Prentis, b. c. 1827, Stonymouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. At home in 1851.
- Phoebe Prentis, b. c. 1828, Stonymouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. At home in 1851.
- Mary Prentis, b. c. 1830, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851.
- Frederick Prentis, b. c. 1832, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851, 1861 and 1871. Not in 1881 census.

- Charles Prentis, b. c. 1836, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851. Not in 1861 census.
- Henrietta Prentis, b. c. 1838, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851, 1861 and 1871.
- Lewis Prentis, b. c. 1840, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851 and 1861. His 1866 obit. reads as follows:
- Dec. 27 (1866): At No. 11, Upper Phillimore-place, Kensington, age 26 (b. c. 1840),
the Rev. Lewis Prentis, late of Bombay, third son of the late Edward Prentis, esq. - Richard Prentis, b. c. 1842, Kensington, Middlesex. At home in 1851 and 1861. Not in 1871 census.

For now, all we know is who Edward is not; he is not the Edward Prentis shown as #5iv in our Spring 2001 article about the Prentices of Maidstone and Cuxton, Kent, England .
