Update of 12 Aug 2008: The 1851 census confirms that William Prentice is the son of James and Matilda Prentice This article is now replaced by our Winter 2003 article entitled Harry Prentice of Needham Market, England .
1. William Prentice, b. c. 1844, Needham Market, Suffolk, England, Mason's Laborer, appears in the 1881 London census living at 12 Suffolk Street, with his wife, Truphena, b. c. 1846, St. George, Hanover Sq., Middlesex, and children:
- Harry Prentice, b. c. 1866, St. George, Hanover Sq., Middlesex.
- Hannah Prentice. b. c. 1870, Fulham, Middlesex.
- Louisa Prentice, b. c. 1872, Fulham, Middlesex. See below.
- Alice Prentice, b. c. 1877, Fulham, Middlesex.
- Robert Prentice, b. c. 1880, Fulham, Middlesex.
Although the parents are not shown in the 1901 census, William and Truphena are likely the parents of the following children who were living together in 1901 at 7 Queensland Road, Islington, London:
- Louisa Prentice, b. 1873, Chelsea, London. See above.
- John Prentice, b. 1883, Fulham, London.
- Emily Prentice, b. 1883, Fulham, London.
- Charles Prentice, b. 1885, Fulham, London.
- William Prentice, b. 1887, Fulham, London.
- Frank Prentice, b. 1887, Fulham, London.
- Thomas Prentice, b. 1890, Fulham, London.
- Henry Prentice, b. 1891, Fulham, London.
- Alfred Prentice, b. 1899, Fulham, London.
We do not yet know the identity of William Prentice's parents, but a check of the IGI shows that James Prentice and his wife, Matilda, had the following children born in Needham Market:
- Hannah Prentice, b. 25 Mar 1837, Needham Market.
- Elizabeth Prentice, chr. 27 Feb 1837, Needham Market.
- Emily Prentice chr. 27 Feb 1837, Needham Market.
- Susan Prentice, chr. 27 Feb 1837, Needham Market.
They may, or may not, be related to William Prentice who was born in Needham
In addition, there seems to be a good chance that he is a brother to Harry Prentice of Needham Market , discussed in our Winter 2003 issue.
