William Prentiss of Scotland & Bay City, MI
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2004 and Revised 30 May 2004

1. William Prentiss was b. in the 1820's in Scotland (the 1870 census, apparently incorrectly, says Canada). The exact year of his birth varies in the different census records in which he appears. William and his family emigrated to the United States sometime between 1848 and 1855 when a son was b. in PA. Between 1855 and 1858 his family moved to MI. He was either 34 or 39 when he appears in the 1860 Bay City, Bay Co., MI census in the 1870 Monitor, Bay Co., MI census, and again in the 1880, Bay City census.

He m. Mary, b. c. 1830 in Scotland. Children per 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records:

  1. Alexander Prentiss, b. c. 1848 to 1851, Scotland (the 1870 census, apparently incorrectly, says Canada). Not in 1880 or 1920 census.
  2. William Prentiss, b. c. 1855-56, PA (the 1870 census, apparently incorrectly, says Michigan).
  3. Jane Prentiss, b. c. 1858, MI. She may be the same person as Jennett/Jennie Prentiss, b. c. 1860, MI. At home in 1880. She might have married George Shorey (see below).
  4. John Prentiss, b. c. 1862, MI. . . . . . . . [2]
  5. Mary Prentiss, b. c. 1864, MI. Not at home in 1880.
  6. James Prentiss, b. c. 1867, MI. . . . . . . . [3]

That same William Prentiss appears in the 1880 census in Bay City, Bay Co., MI, as a Raftsman, b. c. 1822, Scotland, with his wife, Mary, b. in Scotland, and with his son, William, b. in PA.

There is a probability that Unknown Prentice is the same person as William Prentice who appears in the 1900 Bay City, Bay Co., MI census where he is called the father in law of George Shorey.

2. John Prentiss, b. c. 1862, MI. At home in 1880. He appears in thme 1900 Bay City, MI census with his wife, Catherine, b. Mar 1867 in MI, and their children:

  1. William Prentice, b. Mar 1890, MI. Not in 1930 census.
  2. Mary Prentice, b. Mar 1893, MI.
  3. Edward Prentice, b. Feb 1897, MI. . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  4. Loretta Prentice, b. Jan 1899, MI.
He may be the John Prentice who appears in the 1920 census in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN as b. c. 1862-3 in MI and the father of:
  1. Catherine S. Prentiss, b. c. 1891, who m. Gary M. Brandt. Also shown are Catherine's children:
    1. Gary M. Brandt Jr., b. c. 1912. He does not appear in the SSDI.
    2. Thelma L. Brandt, b. c. 1914
    3. Ida J. Brandt, b. c. 1919

John does not appear in the 1930 census.

3. James Prentiss, b. c. 1867, MI. At home in 1880. He might be the James Prentice who appears in the 1920 census in Bay City, Bay Co., MI, as b. c. 1861, MI, with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1870, and children:

  1. (illeg.) Prentice, b. c. 1904, MI
  2. Floyd Prentice, b. c. 1907, MI. He does not appear in the 1930 census. He may be the Floyd Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 2 Mar 1906 and d. 4 Oct 1987 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI.

James does not appear in the 1930 census.

4. Edward John Prentice, b. Feb 1897, MI. He is also probably the Edward Prentice who appears in the 1930 Bangor, Bay Co., MI census with his wife, Dorothy, b. c. 1897, MI, and children:

  1. Katherine Prentice, b. c. 1925, MI
  2. Loretta Prentice, b. c. 1927, MI
  3. Edward Prentice Jr., b. c. 1930, MI. . . . . . . . . [5]

5. Edward John Prentice Jr., b. c. 1930, MI. For his descendants, see our Spring 2001 article about Edward John Prentice .
