Update of 30 May 2008: Samuel Prentice is almost certinly the Samuel Joseph Prentice shown in the IGI as b. 1 Oct 1846 and chr. 13 Dec 1846, St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London, son of Samuel Edmund Prentice and Mary Sophia.
Samuel Edmund Prentice is #2(ii)(c) in our Fall 2000 article about Stephen Prentice of Ipswich, Suffolk Co., England .
1. Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1847, St. Leonard Shoreditch, Middlesex, England, appears in the 1881 census living at 7 Brodia Road, London, Middlesex, and in the later 1901 census for District 1, North Hackney, Hackney, London, England, with his wife and family.
He m. Emma E. (Edith?) , b. c. 1850, St. Leonard Shoreditch. Children, per 1881 and 2001 census:
- Edith M. Prentice, b. c. 1879, St. Mary Stoke Newington, Middlesex.
- Florence A. Prentice, b. c. 1881 St. Mary Stoke Newington, Middlesex.
- Arthur Prentice, b. c. 1883 (per 1901 census)
- Leopold Prentice, b. c. 1885, Calpton, London (per 1901 census)..
Samual may, or may not, be the Samuel J. Prentice who appears as a Lodger in the 1861 London census and as a Lodger in the home of Francis and Mary Ann Heath in the 1871 census in Hackney St. John, Middlesex, and was b. c. 1847.
Although this family bears a superficial resemblance to the family of Samuel Robert Gee Prentice and his wife, Emma Frances Newman, who appears as #6 in our Winter 2000 article about Stephen Prentice of Ipswich , John Cornelius' emails of 20 and 21 Oct 2004 advise that those are 2 different families.
Although only a guess for now, Samuel Prentice might be the Samuel Prentice who is the son of Samuel Edmund Prentice who was chr. 26 Aug 1822 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch. We do not yet have a marriage for him, but his birth date is such that he would have been 25 when the 1847 Samuel Prentice was b. c. 1847 at St. Leonard Shoreditch.
The 1822 Samuel Prentice is #2xi(c) in our Fall 2000 article about Stephen Prentice of Ipswich .
