By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2004 and Revised 17 Dec 2005

Update of 4 Jul 2004: Roy Prentice is the son of Myron Prentice and his roots have been traced back to Essex Co., England. The article, below, has been revised to update information about Roy's family using information in our eBook.

1209. Roy LaVern Prentice (Myron M., 778). Born, 17 Jun 1907, in Itaska, Broome, NY [656]. Died, 24 Nov 1990. Census: 1920, in Unk., Broome, NY. He married, first, Ester Hyde. Children:

  1. Paul Norman Prentice. . . . . . . . . [1806]

Note: By email of 16 Dec 2005, Wayne Prentice explains that Paul has a half sister named Nancy Ryan, daughter of Roy's wife, Esther Hyde, above, and William Ryan of Clayton, NY. It is unclear whether Nancy Ryan was the daughter of an earlier marriage of Esther, or whether she is Esther's daughter by a later marriage by Esther after Roy and Esther parted.

Roy m. 2nd Jessie Kintner on 22 Feb 1936. Children of Roy and Jessie

  1. Richard Harold Prentice. Born, 1936.

  3. Sharon Virginia Prentice. . . . . . . . . [1808]

By email of 16 Dec 2005, Wayne Prentice explains that Paul Prentice has a half sister named Nancy Ryan, daughter of Roy's wife, Esther Hyde, above, and William Ryan of Clayton, NY. In the absence of Nancy Ryan's birth date, it is unclear whether Nancy Ryan was the daughter of an earlier marriage of Esther, or whether she is Esther's daughter by a later marriage by Esther after Roy and Esther parted.

1806. Paul Prentice was b, c, 1930 in Binghamton, NY, and d.29 Jun 2004 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He lived in Hyde Park at the time of his death. His obituary related that he was a graduate of the University of Rochester in 1952, he was also a U.S. Navy veteran. He was employed by IBM for 33 years, retiring in 1990. He was active in the community as a tax payers advocate of the Hyde Park Central School District and served on numerous volunteer committees for the Hyde Park Town Council. Who are Roy Prentice's Parents?

It seens likely that Roy Prentice is the same person as the Roy Prentice who appears in the 1930 census in Barker, Broome Co., NY as b. c. 1908, unmarried, and the son of Myron Prentice, b. 29 Aug 1881, NY (as were both his parents), and Flora , b. 2 Sep 1884, NY (as were both her parents) and d. 4 Apr 1959. Flora was the dau. of Eugene Cowdry Swift and Lucy Ettie Palmer (per 1930 census and Ancestry.com).

The 1910 and 1920 census shows Myron Prentice living in Barker, Broome Co., NY, as was his son, Roy, in the 1930 census. Myron's children per the 1920 census:

  1. Mable Prentice, b. c. 1907, NY
  2. Ray Prentice, b. c. 1908, NY
  3. Frank Prentice, b. c. 1908, NY
  4. Fay Prentice (son), b. c. 1911, NY
  5. Ralph Prentice, b. c. 1914, NY

No other Prentice family is shown living in Barker, Broome Co., NY in the 1910 census. That would suggest that Myron was born elsewhere and had moved to Barker by 1910.

Given the name of "Roy Prentice" and Binghamton location,, Roy might, or might not, be related (as a nephew?) to Roy H Prentice, who appears in the 1930 census in Binghamton, Broome, NY with his wife, Hazel M., b. c. 1895, NY. Roy's birth year is unclear. A look at a microfilm copy of the 1930 census show that the age has been written over and looks like age "41" which would give Roy a birth year of 1889, a year in line with his wife's birth year of 1895.
