Update of 15 May 2008: Robert Speir Prentice appears in the 1841 census in Elderslie, Renfrewshire as b. c. 1841 with his parents, James Prentice, b. c. 1811, Renfrewshire, and Agnes, b. c. 1811, Renfrewshire. This article is now replaced by our later Spring 2007 article about James Prentice of Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland .
1. Robert Speir Prentice was b. c. 1841, Elderslie, Renfrewshire, Scotland (per 1861 census). Elderslie lies on the western edge of Glasgow. In 1871, 1881 and 1891 census in Kilbarchan. He appears in the 1901 census in Kilbarchan as a Butcher living at 6 Bridge St. with his family. (see map)
He m. Jane Rowan on 4 Sep 1860 in Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland, which lies about 2-3 miles west of Elderslie (see map). She was b. c. 1841, Linwood, Renfrewshire (per 1861 census) which lies about a miles NW of Elderslie (see map). Children (per IGI):
- James Prentice, b. 28 Aug 1861 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. Not in 1871 census. At home in 1881 census. A Boarder, unmarried, in the 1891 census in Greenock East.
- Alexander Prentice, b. 14 Jul 1863 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. At home in 1871 census. May have d. before 1884 as a later son also named Alexander.
- Jane Prentice, b. 11 Aug 1865, Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. Not in 1871 census. At home in 1881 census.
- Christina Prentice, b. 28 Dec 1868 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. Not in 1871 census.
- Agnes Prentice, b. 2 May 1870 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. At home in 1871 and 1881 census.
- Robert Prentice, b. 19 Sep 1872 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. At home in 1871 and 1881 census.
- Marion Prentice, dau., b. c. 1873, Linwood, Renfrewshire. At home in 1871 and 1881 census. At home in 1901.
- Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1878, Linwood, Renfrewshire. At home in 1871 and 1881 census. At home in 1901.
