We are helping Sandra Van Zandt in tracing the Prentice roots of her distant great-grandmother. Here is what we have so far:

1. Parmelia Prentice, or some spelling variation of her first and last names, was born in Bethlehem, Litchfield Co. CT in 1795 and d. 26 Jan 1856 in Granger, Allegany Co., NY according to information which appears in a hand written record contained in her GGG Grandfather's Bible and Ancestry.com .

Parmelia m. Isaac A Hunt on 10 Apr 1814 at Woodbury, CT (per History of Ancient Woodbury, cited in Sandra's email of 16 Feb 2003). He was b. 3 Dec 1786, Woodbury , Litchfield Co., CT, and d. 6 Dec 1872, Plymouth, Litchfield Co., CT. Isaac's date and place of birth and death are also recorded in the Bible. Children of Parmelia and Isaac:

Rollin m. 2nd Mary Melinda Gill on 23 Dec 1849. She was b. 9 Oct 1830 and d. 4 Jan 1920. Rollin was a Physician and may have lived in NY at the date of Parmelia's death in 1856. Children:

Sandra has suggested that Parmelia might be a granddaughter of Christopher Prentis, b. 13 Apr 1726, Woodbridge, Litchfield Co., and whose family has a connection with Bethlehem. We show 12 children for Christopher, but none born after 1771. Christopher did have sons whose daughter Permelia might, or might not, be:

1. Amaziah Prentis. He m. Betsey Root c. 1780 and had at least 6 children; the last shown was b. 1790. That corresponds with the 1800 census which shows no children born between 1790 and 1800. We can, therefore, exclude him as a possibility.

2. John Prentis. He had 11 childrenI have is a listing of 11 children for John and Martha which appears in C. J. F. Binney's 1883 PRENTICE book which was taken from an old Bible record owned by John's granddaughter, Eliza, which she sent to Binney.

   Eliza's old Bible record listing 11 children would seem to be a comprehensive and reliable listing of their children. John and Martha were having children every 2 years aa regular as clockwork (Aug 1786, Aug 1788, Dec 1790, Mar 1793, Apr 1795, Mar 1797, etc.). There is no child named Parmelia, or any spelling variation thereof, nor is there any time gap into which Parmelia would easily fit.

   They did have a daughter, Lucy Prentice, b. 20 Apr 1795, but she married C. B. Munson and d. 17 Feb 1874 in Delhi, NY. That was some 18 years after Parmelia's 1856 death.

   I have to conclude, from Eliza's Bible records, that Parmelia is not a daughter of John and Martha. However, I'm willing to consider hard evidence to the contrary.

3. Josiah Prentis m. Bathsheba Flandee and their first known child was b. 1797. However, we do not have a marriage date for Josiah, so their might have been 1 or more children born earlier. However, by 1800 he was living in Red Hook, Dutchess Co., NY, so it seems unlikely that Parmelia, if his daughter, would have married in 1814 in Woodbury, CT

4. Sherman Prentis. He m. Susan Richards. They had 10 children born both before and after 1795, but none named Permelia.

5. Zachariah Prentis, b. 1757. He apparently reached adulthood, but we have no information whether he married, had a family, or when he died.

6. Gideon Prentis, b. 1767. Like Zachariah, he apparently reached adulthood, but we have no information whether he married, had a family, or when he died. We do know, however, that at one point he apparently lived in Whitesboro, Oneida Co., NY.

So, it may very well be that Permelia is a granddaughter of Christopher, but further investigation is needed to determine her father's identity; whether it could be Zachariah or Gideon.
