John Prentice of Scotland, NY and NJ

John Prentice of Scotland, NY and NJ
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2004 and Revised 15 Apr 2014

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1830, Scotland, as were both of his parents.

As indicated by the birth of his oldest son, James, John emigrated to the United States at some date before 1860 and settled in New York. He appears in the 1880 census in New York City, NY at the age of 50 and as a Machinist. He was a widower and no wife is shown, but the 1910 census of his son, James, shows her as b. in NY. He may be the same person as the John Prentice shown in the 1910 Bloomfield, Essex Co., NJ census where his son, Ninian, lives. Children:

  1. James Prentice, b. c. 1860, NY. . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. John Prentice Jr., b. c. 1862, NY
  3. Ninian/Niman Prentice, b. Nov 1867, NY. . . . . . . . [3]

2. James Prentice, b. c. 1860, NY. He is likely the same person as the James C. Prentice shown in the1910 census in Bloomfield, Essex Co., NJ where his brother, Ninian, was living. Shown with James in the 1910 census is his wife, Susan A., b. c. 1860, NJ. No children are shown. Not in 1920 census.

3. Ninian/Niman Prentice, b. Nov 1867, NY and was living in New York City at home in the 1880 census. There is some confusion as to his first name; the 1880 census index calls him "Niman" but the microfilm copy could be read as "Ninian." The 1900 census is not yet available, but the 1910 census in Bloomfield, Essex Co., NJ identifies him as Ninian A. Prentice." He appears in the 1900 census in Hoboken, Hudson Co., NJ, with his wife. Still later, appears in the 1920 census index in Lyndhurst, Bergen Co., NJ as "Niman Prentice". Not in 1930 census. 1840 census in Wayne, Passaic Co., NJ.

He m. Bessie, b. May 1872, Ireland. Children, per 1900 census:

  1. John Prentice, b. Jul 1892, NJ. Not in 1930 census. 1940 census at home in Wayne, Passaic Co., NJ. He does not appear in the SSDI.
  2. Lester J. Prentice, b. 8 Sep 1899, NJ and d. Jul 1891, Lincoln Park, Morris Co., NJ (per 1910 census and SSDI). 1940 census in Lincoln Park where shown with his wife, Elma Hosier, b. c. 1905, NJ, and also shown as a "Clerk, Electrical Mfg" with 2 years of High School. Living with them in 1940 was Elma's mother, Elera Hosier, b. c. 1874, NJ. Son:
    1. Lester Prentice, b. c. 1931, NJ. 1940 at home.
