John Prentice of Ireland and Southampton, England

John Prentice of Enniskillen, Ireland and Southampton, Hampshire, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2003 and Revised 22 Jul 2016

We are working with Bonnie Prentice and Carol and Laurie Galouskin in tracing their Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1823 in Enniskillen (or Derryvullan per Ancestry.com ), Co. Fermanagh, Ireland and d. 1891 at Barton, Milton, Southampton. The names of his parents are presently unknown, but they were likely b. c. 1790-1800 and perhaps in, or near, Enniskillen, Ireland.

The following information about Enniskillen appears in the town's website at http://www.enniskillen.com/enniskillen.html :

Enniskillen is the County Town of Fermanagh, located almost exactly in the Centre of the County on the natural island which separates the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. The town is home to a population of approximately 11,500, by far the largest settlement in the County. As one would expect, the town is a retail centre for the County, and beyond, but it has yet to succumb to the blandness which infects many modern towns.

The town centre is firmly built along the long, narrow Main St, which actually changes name six times along its length! This gives the town a real sense of bustle and life as well as imbuing the shops with their own unique character. There is no new, anonymous, development to be found on the Main Street and the established High Street Stores sit comfortably beside small independent traders, creating a special atmosphere for the place. A feature of Enniskillen which is becoming increasingly unusual is the number of small bars and hostelries which appear on the Main Street, providing welcome relief from the shops.

Hello, I just googled Basil Prentice to see if any of his artwork was posted on the internet. I was at the Prentice home in East Hampton CT. in the early 70's with Lorna's daughter Holly Ann Hooker. Basil was an extremely gifted artist. He had an art studio on his property. He did life like watercolors. He had busts of Lorna and his wife and others. The collection was taken by the relatives from CA Holly was very upset because she believed they should be in a museum for all to enjoy.

Basil had a son named Rodney and I believe there was another from CA. Lorna was a concert pianist and a great painter. Holly was also. Holly had a congenital heart defect and passed away in her 40's. She is buried in a cemetary in East Hampton, CT along side her mother Lorna, and her grandfather Basil and grandmother. She adored her grandfather he was a very kind person. When Basil and his wife were gone the house was left with Rodney Prentice. He was the youngest child.

Appendix A: Correspondence :

Attached is correspondence we received from St. Macartins Cathedral in Enniskillen:

Our Church records only go back to 1845 for marriages and 1872 for baptisms. Most Church records before then were destroyed in Dublin during the Easter Rising. There are very few burial records. I have checked what we have and found:

    - James Prentice (father Thomas), Killea married Elizabeth Prentice (father John), Shanco, Lisbellaw (a village about 5 miles from Enniskillen on 31/10/1870, also

    - Margaret Prentice (father John), Shanco married James Miller, Magonragh on 21/07/1852 and

    - William Prentice (father John), Shanco, Lisbellaw married Mary Elliott, Castle Street, Enniskillen on 24/05/1878.

There were no dates of birth for any of these people.

The Public Records Office, 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast BT9 6NY might also be able to help you further. Their email address is proni@dcalni.gov.uk telephone 02890 251318.

There are also records kept in the Representative Church Body Library, Braemor Park, Churchtown, Dublin 14 telephone 00353 4923979 or email library@ireland.anglican.org. Frankie Roofe works in Enniskillen Town Hall, Town Hall Street, Enniskillen, telephone 02866 325050 (sorry I do not have an email address for him) and also does some genealogy research (for a fee) and might be able to help. . . .
