Who are John Prentice's Parents?

John does not appear in the 2008 IGI. The only information we have as to John's place of birth is in the 1881 census which says, simply, that it was in Essex County.

The 1841 and 1851 census showed only 3 possibilities, all of which can be excluded:

1. John Prentice, b. c. 1839, Paglesham, Essex, son of William Prentice (b. c. 1800-1801, Canewdon, Essex) and Rebecca (b. c. 1808 or 1811, Hockley, Essex). However, he can be excluded because the names of his wife and children differ (see #4.1 in our Spring 2003 article about the Prentices of Canewdon, Essex, England ).

2. John Prentice, b. c. 1838, Sandon, Essex, son of Thomas and Caroline Prentice. However, he can be excluded because the names of his wife and children differ.

3. John Prentice, b. c. 1839, Writtle, Essex, son of Steven (b. c. 1806, Essex) and Ann Prentice (b. c. 1810, Essex). Steven apparently d. before 1851 as Ann appears in the 1851 census in Willingale Doe as Ann Akley, wife of William Akley (b. c. 1797, Willingale Doe, Essex). John appears there as a son-in-law. Not in 1861 census. However, he can be excluded because in the 1871 census the names of his wife and children differ.
