In reviewing GRO records, Scotland census records, and the IGI, we find the following Prentice families:
1. John Prentice, chr. 29 Mar 1812, Carluke. He is tentatively identified as the John Prentice shown in the 1851 and 1861 census in Libberton, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1811-13, Carluke, with his wife and family.
He m. Janet Tait (per Liz Skipper, email, 13 Sep 2008), b. c. 1816, Peebles, Peeblesshire. Known children:
- Robert Prentice, b. c. 1837, Kilbucho, Peeblesshire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1841, Kilbucho, Peeblesshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 census. In the 1861 census he was a Servant in Kilbucho.
- Janet Prentice, b. c. 1843, Kilbucho, Peeblesshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 census.
- Grace Prentice, b. c. 1846, Libberton, Lanarkshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 census. 1871 census living with the family of hr brother, Robert, above.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1849, Libberton, Peeblesshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 and 1861 census.
- Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1856, Libberton, Peeblesshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1861 census.
2. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1837, Kilbucho, Peeblesshire. At home in Libberton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 and 1861 census.
- He appears, in the 1861 census in Eddleston, Peeblesshire living at Shiplaw Cottage with his wife and family.
- He appears in the 1881 census in Walston, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1838, Broughton, Peeblesshire, with his wife and family.
- He appears in the 1891 census in Carrington, Midlothian, as b. c. 1837, Broughton, Peeblesshire, with his wife and family. He was a General labourer living at Brotchrigg Sawmill.
- He appears in the 1901 census in Lasswade, Midlothian, as b. in Broughton, Peeblesshire with his wife and family living at Newbigging Rd., Gourlaw Cottage.
He m. Catherine, b. c. 1844, Crawford, Lanarkshire. Children:
- John Prentice, b. c. 1870, Lamington, Lanarkshire. At home in 1871 in Eddleston, Peeblesshire. At home in Walston in the 1881 census. At home in Carrington in the 1891 census. Not in 1901 census.
- Hannah Prentice, b. c. 1872, Eddleston, Peeblesshire. At home in Walston in the 1881 census.
- George Prentice, b. c. 1873, Symington, Lanarkshire. At home in Walston in the 1881 census. He may be the George Prentice shown in the 1891 census in Cockpen, Midlothian as b. c. 1873, Lamington, Lanarkshire, an unmarried Farm Servant.
- Robert Prentice, b. c. 1875, Walston, Lanarkshire. At home in Walston in the 1881 census. At home in Carrington in the 1891 census.
- Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1877, Walston, Lanarkshire. At home in Walston in the 1881 census. At home in Carrington in the 1891 census.
