Who are James Prentiss' Parents?

The only clue we have so far as to the identity of James Prentiss' parents is from the 1920 census showing that James' father was b. in NY and his mother was b. in VA.

On the supposition that perhaps James' father, b. in NY, had moved to VA by 1910, we checked the 1910 census. We found a single person, James D. Prentiss, b. c. 1845-46 in NY, who was in 1910 living in Richmond, Henrico Co., VA.

James may, or may not, be the James Prentice, b. c. 1844-45 who appears in the 1870 census in Giles, Ameila Co.,VA with his wife, Sarah, b. c. 1847, NY. No children are shown. It may, or may not, be that same James Prentice who later appears in the 1880 census in Clover Hill, Chesterfield Co.,VA, as b. c. 1845-46, with both of his parents b. in NY, and with his wife, Mattie, VA, b. c. 1852, and children:

  1. Charles Prentice,b. c. 1879, VA.
