1. James/Jack Goodwin Prentice was b. 14 Oct 1893, Redding, Shasta Co., CA, and d. 23 Oct 1974, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ per Ancestry.com . He appears in the 1920 census in Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TX and in the 1930 census in Del Rey, Maricopa Co., AZ, as Jack G. Prentice with his wife and family. His obituary reads as follows:

PRENTICE, Jack Goodwin

Jack Goodwin Prentice, 81, who came to the Valley in 1929 and had been in the garage business 32 years until retiring six years ago, died Wednesday in his home, 6436 W. Flynn Lane.  Mr. Prentice at one time owned Prentice & Son Garage at 6335 N. Seventh St. 

Survivors include his wife, Nellie; children, Mrs. Helen Smith, Elmer M. and Gary E.; a brother, Albert; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Memory Lawn Mausoleum Chapel, 719 N. 27th Ave.  Entombment will be in Mmeory Lawn Mausoleum.  Published in the Arizona Republic October 25, 1974.

He m. Nellie Orena Brown. She was b. 14 Feb 1900, TX, and d. Feb 1986, Glendale, Maricopa Co., AZ. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com . Children (per 1920 census):

1. Elmer Morlan Prentice, b. 15 May 1918, AR, and d. 27 Sep 2008 in Dewey, Yavapai Co., AZ. At home in 1930 census. He m. Elender M. in 1940. She was b. 13 Aug 11922 and d. 17 Sep 1990 in Dewey, Yavapai Co., AZ. Children:
   1. (son) Prentice.
   2. Marsha L. Prentice, b. 18 Dec 1942 and d. 25 Mar 2000. She m. Mr. Turpel.
2. Helen B. Prentice, b. c. 1918, TX. At home in 1930 census. She m. Mr. Smith.
3. Gary E. Prentice

The only clue we have so far is that he has a brother, Albert Prentice and the 1920 census which says his mother and father were born in England, although the 1930 census says they were born in the "United States."

No English Prentice appears in the 1920 census in TX, so one could infer that, since James was born c. 1893 in CA, his parents were still living in CA in 1920 and probably b. before 1872, and perhaps much earlier. A review of the 1920 CA census shows only two Prentices living in CA in 1920:

1. James Prentiss, b. c. 1872 in England and living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. He was then 48 and had a son, Phillip, age 6 and b. c. 1914. The census shows he emigrated in 1889(?) and was naturalized in 1892(?).. His wife was b. c. 1884, and if she was his first wife, it is unlikely she had James in 1893. Setting aside the different spelling of his surname, we can probably exclude him as James' father

2. George Prentice, b. c. 1854 in England and living in Corning, Tehama Co., CA In 1920 he was then 66 and had a daughter, Margaretta, age 15 and b. c. 1905. His wife, Sarah, was also b. c. 1854 and was only about 39 when James was born
