James E. Prentis of South Africa and Boston, Suffolk Co., MA

James E. Prentis of South Africa and Boston, Suffolk Co., MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2004 and Revised 8 Jul 2006

1. James E. Prentis was b. c. 1875 in South Africa. He appears in the 1930 census in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, without a wife, but with his children:

  1. Thomas Prentis, b. c. 1915, MA.
  2. James F. Prentis, b. c. 1916, MA.
  3. Charles F. Prentis, b. c. 1927-28, MA.

Who are James E. Prentis' Parents?

We do have a clue from the 1930 census. His father was born in VT and his mother was b. in England.

We note that in the 1900 census in Melrose Ward 3, Middlesex Co., MA, there appears a James E. Prentiss, b. c. 1875 in an uncertain location; the original census records seems to read "British (illegible; Poss?)" and then overwritten with the word "England." His father is shown as b. in Vermont and his mother us shown British/England overwritting. The entire family, as shown in the 1900 census record, is as follows:

Louisa Prentiss, head, b. Mar 1851, England.
James E. Prentiss, son, b. Sep 1874, England
Thomas Prentiss, son, b. May 1876, England.
    Mary L. L. Prentiss, dau., b. c. 1880, England.
Christine H. Prentiss, dau., b. Dec 1887, England.

The census reference to "British....." would seem to be consistent with James' stated birth in South Africa; if the family members were born in England, one would expect that to be the original entry, as is the case with most emigrants from England.
