Immigrant Prentices

Immigrant Prentices
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2004 and Revised 10 Jun 2004

For the earliest period in American history, say from 1620 to 1700, researchers have a fairly good record showing the countries of birth of the immigrants in the various Prentice, Prentis and Prentiss families.

There was, however a large inflow of Prentice, Prentis and Prentiss families after that time from England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and other countries. In reviewing U. S. census records for 1790 (which would include many folks born in the early 1700s), 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840, we note that such census records do not contain information about the place of birth and, more specifically, do not indicate whether the persons were born outside the United States.

In our database, we have a great many folks who have been traced back to that period, many of whom undoubtedly were born outside the United States in England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and elsewhere, but we have no way to connect them to the many Prentice, Prentis and Prentiss families in those countries about whom we have information.

If you have information about a Prentice, Prentis or Prentiss who you believe may have emigrated to the United States in the period from the early 1700s to 1850, and if we have not previously corresponded, we would surely like to hear from you and perhaps we can help you in tracing your roots further back in time.

If you have any information about the folks mentioned in this article, please send your information to us at the Prentice Newsletter. Be sure to give the full title and date of this article in the Subject line of the email.
