Winter 2004 and Revised 20 May 2008

Update of 20 May 2008: Henry Prentice is #11 in our Summer 2000 article about Mary Ann Prentice of Diss, Norfolk . That article now replaces this article.

We received the following information from Margaret Davies in her email to us of 30 Oct 2004. To it we have added census information as noted at appropriate places:

1. Henry Prentice was b. c. 1830-31, Brockdish, Norfolk, England. Brockdish lies about 4 miles east of Dickleburgh where some of his children were born.

Henry appears with his family in the 1871 census in Pulham St. Mary Magdalene with his wfe and family. In 1881 he was an Agricultural Laborer and was living on Farrow Lasne, Claxton, Norfolk (per 1881 census). The 1891 census shows his family living at 45 Incbec Road, Norwich. The 1901 census shows him living in Norwich, Parish Thorpe St. Matthew, Norfolk, with his wife and son, Herbert.

They seem to have got married a few months after she was born." In 1871 census, Elizabeth Clarke was living with her grandparents Robert and Mary Clarke in Thorndon.

  5. Ellen Prentice, dau., b. c. 1880, Tibenham. At home in 1881 and 1891. She may be the same person as Nellie Prentice living at home and shown as b. c. 1881, Tibenham.
  6. Alice C. Prentice, b. c. 1885, Norfolk. At home in 1891and 1901.

Who are the parents of Henry Prentice?

Margaret Davies advises that Henry's wedding records identifies Henry's father as John Prentice. She also thinks, but cannot yet prove, that Henry's parents are John Prentice and Phoebe Preston. They married on 17 Apr l 1829 in Brockdish, Norfolk, where Henry was b. 2 years later (Margaret advises per IGI). The 1841 census for St. Mary Magdalen Pulham, Norfolk, show John Prentice, b. c. 1805, Norfolk, with his wife, Phebe, b. c. 1807, Norfolk, and children:

  1. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1830, Norfolk
  2. Caroline Prentice, b. c. 1832, Norfolk
  3. Sarah Prentice, b. c. 1836, Norfolk
  4. James Prentice, b. c. 1839, Norfolk

Although only an educated guess at this point, it seems likely that John Prentice is #3.1ix in our Summer 2000 article about Mary Ann Prentice of Diss, Norfolk .
