1. Henry C. Prentiss was b. c. 1816 in NY. He appears in the 1850 census in Morris, Morris Co., NJ, with his wife, Catherine, b. c. 1823, VA. No children are shown.
One clue to the identity of Henry C. Prentiss' ancestry is Elizabeth Prentiss, b. c. 1789 in NJ, who also appears in the 1850 census in Morris, NJ. She was then age 60, about 27 years. Elizabeth later appears in the 1860 census in Bernards Twp., Somerset Co., NJ living with Henry's wife, Catherine, whose occupation was given as "Seamstress."
A check of the 1840 census does not show any Prentiss family living in Morris Co., NJ, so Catherine and her son moved to Morris Co. from another place, perhaps NY where Henry was born in 1816.
