Update of 28 Apr 2014: Hannah Prentice is the wife of #3 Jacob (James) Pantus in our Winter 2002 article, Frank Prentice of MI and Tacoma, WA . That article now replaces this article.
1. (unknown) Prentice perhaps was b. c. 1825-1831 in Holland.
He m. Hannah who was b. c. 1831, Holland, with both parents b. in Holland. We do not know when she emigrated to American, but it would have been after the 1866 birth of her son, Nely, and perhaps after the 1870 census (not in 1870 U. S. census) and before the 1880 census where Hannah and her family do appear. We do not presently know whether he emigrated to the U. S. with his wife and their children.
Hannah Prentice appears without a husband, but with her children, in the 1880 census of Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. Neither Hannah nor the children appear in the earlier 1870 and later 1900 census.
Hannah's children shown are:
- Herman Prentice, b. c. 1859, Holland with both parents born in Holland. At home in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1880 census. Not in the 1900 census.
- Frank Prentice, b. c. 1860, Holland with both parents born in Holland. At home in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1880 census. Not in the 1900 census.
- Nely Prentice (son), b. c. 1866, Holland with both parents born in Holland. At home in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1880 census. Not in the 1900 census.
Also appearing in the 1880 Grand Rapits, Kent Co., MI, census is John Prentice, b. c. 1856, Holland, with both parents b. in Holland, and his wife, Annie, b. c. 1855, NY. with both parents b. in NY. It seems likely that John is a sibling to Herman, Frank and Nely, above, and that John probably m. Annie in MI. John and Annie do not appear in the 1900 census.
We do note that the 1910 San Francisco, CA, census shows a John Prentiss, b. c. 1856, Holland, with both parents b. in Holland, but his wife is shown as Mary, b. c. 1865, Germany, with both parents b. in Germany. It is unclear whether this is the same John Prentice with a 2nd wife.
