Update of 11 Aug 2008: George Wood Prentice is #20(iii)(a)(1) in our Fall 1999 article entitled The Prentices of the Colnes, Essex Co., England . That article now replaces this article.
By email of 21 Feb 2003, Kerry Prentice, supplemented by 1881 Census information, provided us with the following information:
1. George Wood Prentice was b. c. 1852, Shenfield, Essex Co., England, which lies approximately 10-15 miles SW of Chelmsford. In 1876 he was a Railway Clerk and lived at 8 Chesterford Terrace, Stanley Rd., Hackney, Middlesex. In the 1881 and 1891 census, George and his family lived at 45 Glaskin Rd., London, Middlesex.
George m. Theresa Harriet Miller. She was b. c. 1858, Dalston, Middlesex. Son:
- George James Prentice, b. 11 Sep 1876, Hackney, Middlesex. He m. Unknown Sep 1902 in Hackney.
George may be the George Prentice, b. 1852, who appears in the 1901 census at Hackney Stoke Newington as a "Labourer General". Neither his son nor his wife have been located in the 1901 census.
For the moment we have no clues as to the identity of his parents. George does not appear in the IGI, nor does the 1881 census show any other Prentice born in Shenfield, Essex County.
By email of 29 Apr 2003, Kerry Prentice suggests the possibility that George Wood Prentice's father may be the George Prentice who appears in the 1851 Billericay, Essex, Shenfield census who was b. c. 1796 in Pagelsham, Essex.
