Update of 13 Nov 2004: The 1900 MA census shows Charles Theodore Prentice is the son of Theodore Parmelee Prentiss of Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, #1922 in our database. Charles' father was b. in CT and his mother in Scotland.

1. Charles Theodore Prentice was b. 8 Sep 1881 in MA and d. 20 Jun 1944 in Los Angeles, CA. The 1920 census shows him living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. The census indicates that he was a 38 year old hotel steward, working as a salary worker. He was living with his wife as a roomer in the household of Anna L. Nuchey at 6200 Walnut Street in the 7th Ward. He is listed as having been born in Massachusetts, as was his father. His mother was born in Scotland. His given name, middle initial and surname are listed as "Charles T Prentice" in this census. The 1930 census shows him living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA . The census indicates that he was a 48 year old purchasing agent at a club, working as a wage or salary worker. At the time the census was taken, he was at work. He was living with his wife and son in a house, which was rented for $45 per month , at 2810 Harcourt. He was first married at the age of 30. He is listed as having been born in Massachusetts. His father is listed as being born in Connecticut, which conflicts with the prior census, and his mother is listed as being born in Scotland. He was not a veteran. His given name and middle initial are listed as "Charles T" in this census. This district was Assembly District 57 (part), bounded by (N) Ferndale; (E) Farmdale Ave., Farmdale Ave. Extended; (S) City Limits; (W) Mansfield Ave. Extended, Mansfield, S. La Brea Ave.

Who are Charles Theodore Prentice's Parents?

As to his father, the census records are conflicting: the 1920 census says he was b. in MA while the 1930 census says he was b. in CT. Both records say his mother was b. in Scotland and California Death Records give his mother's maiden name as Reid.

While Charles, b. 8 Sep 1881 would not appear in the 1880 MA census, we thought that perhaps his parents would. We checked the 1880 MA census to see if there were any Prentice wives shown who were b. in Scotland. The 1880 census shows only a single Prentiss wife b. in Scotland. She is Jane Prentiss, b. c. 1842, Scotland, age 38, and a widow in the 1880 census.

In addition to the different surname spelling, Jane Prentiss' husband would have died more than a year before Charles' 8 Sep 1881 birth so it is unlikely that they are Charles' parents.

A search of California Death Records for a mother surnamed "Reid" produces 3 records, but does not disclose any other Prentice fitting Charles' MA birth and 1920 PA residence.
