Arthur Prentice of Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY

Arthur Prentice of Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 29 Mar 2004

We are helping Melody Silverman in tracing her Prentice family tree. Here is what we have so far:

1. Unknown Prentice was b. in NY, likely between 1827 and 1857, depending on whether his son, Arthur, was a first, middle, or last child (we say "he", but there is always a slight chance that Arthur's mother was an unmarried female). He had 1 or more children:

  1. Arthur E. Prentice, b. Mar 1877. . . . . . . . [2]

2. Arthur E. Prentice was b. Mar 1877 in NY and d. in 1955 at the age of 78. Both of his parents were b. in NY. Unfortunately, he does not appear in the 1880 census, but does first appear in the 1900 Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY census as a 23 year old student in school and living with his uncle, Henry Whitmore, b. c. May 1819, CT (age 81) and aunt, Mary J. Whitmore, b. Apr 1824, NY (age 76). Henry's parents were b. in CT and Mary's parent's were b. in NY (per 1900 census, Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY, Sup. Dist. 58, E.D. 57, Sheet 3, pg. 40. See also 1900 census at Ancestry.com, ED 57, Image 5). Arthur's occupation was that of a brakeman.

Since both of Arthur's parents were b. in NY, and Mary was b. in NY, that would seem to suggest that Mary's maiden name was Prentice and that she was a sister to Arthur's father. On the other hand, Henry and Mary might be kin on Arthur's mother's side, in which case neither would have a Prentice surname.

Information provided by Melody Silverman says that Arthur m. Elizabeth Lake in 1904 in Millers Mills, NY. She was b. 11 Aug 1886 in Little Falls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lake. Elizabeth was an ironer at White Star Laundry in Little Falls. Her obituary relates that Elizabeth passed away at the age of 70 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Ben Amell of 18 Lewis St, Little Falls. Burial was in Church Street Cemetary, Little Falls.

Family tradition says that Elizabeth was an an indian, perhaps Mohawk. We know from the 1930 census entry of their son, Arthur, that both Arthur and Elizabeth were b. in NY. In the 1930 Little Falls census, Elizabeth is shown as the head of the household, living with her daughter, Jane. Arthur does not appear in the household. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Arthur Prentice Jr., b. 10 Oct 1906, NY. . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  2. Marion Prentice. She m. Mr. Zambri. We do not yet know his first name, but he is likely a son of Anthony and Mary Zabri of Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY.
  3. Dorothy Prentice. She m. Mr. Buckley. She might be the Dorothy A. Buckley who appears in the 1930 Little Falls census as b. c. 1909 with her husband, Joseph, b. c. 1906, and children:
    1. Joseph Buckley, b. c. 1928.
    2. Betsy E. Buckley, b. c. 1929,
  4. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1912 and living at home in the 1930 Little Falls census. She m. Ben Amell.

3. Arthur Prentice (Jr.?) was b. 10 Oct 1906 in NY, as were both of his parents. He appears in the 1930 census in Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY with his wife, Martha (Savage?), b. c. 1911, NY and deceased by 2004.

Arthur Jr. died in an automobile accident on 26 May 1930 on the Old Doldgeville Rd, in Manheim, near Little Falls, NY. At the time of his death he was employed as a chaffaue at a produce company. After Arthur's death, Martha moved to Amsterdam, NY. Arthur and Martha had a son:

  1. Raymond A. Prentice, b. 19 Jan 1929 and d. 1 Jan 1979. He m. Carmeta G. Bovee. Children:
    1. Melody Prentice. She m. Mr. Silverman.
    2. Raymond A. Prentice Jr.
    3. Krystle L. Prentice

Who are Arthur Prentice's Parents?

In addition, Arthur Jr. (#2 above) may, or may not, be the Arthur Prentice who appears in the 1920 census in Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY in the home of Hiram and Minnie Mullinex. Hiram is probably related to John Mullinex who was living next door in 1920 and to James Mullinex who lived 4 doors away.

Hiram was then age 61, b. c. 1859 and seems too old to be adopting children. A guess: Hiram and his wife, Minnie, may be either Arthur's maternal grandparents or a maternal uncle and aunt..

We do note that in the 1880 Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY census there are Mullinex families as well as a Lewis Prentice, b. c. 1858, NY, who was then unmarried and whose parents were both born in NY. It is tempting to think that It might be that Lewis later married Christina Mullinex, b. c. 1869 and dau. of John Mullinex, b. c. Jun 1830 (per IGI, but the 1880 census says b. c. 1824) in Andes, Delaware Co., NY, and his wife, Christina of Tompkins and that they may be Arthur's parents.
