William H. Prentice of Northern Ireland and Manchester, Hartford Co., CT
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2002 and Revised 6 Oct 2010

Update of 6 Oct 2010: William H Prentice is the son of William James Prentice and is #3 in our Winter 2002 article entitled William James Prentice of Ieland and Vernon, CT . That article now replaces this article.

1. William H. Prentice was b. c. 1881 at an unknown location in Northern Ireland.

He emigrated to the United States sometime between 1890 and 1894 at the age of 9 to 13 years(depending on different census records information), perhaps with his parents, and was naturalized in 1902. William does not appear in current Ellis Island records on the internet which do not go back that far.

It is unclear whether he is the William J. Prentice who appears in the 1900 census in Manchester, Hartford Co. CT, census as a single boarder, b. Mar 1877, Ireland, with both parents b. in Ireland. It indicates he immigrated in 1991 at the age of 14 and was a Silk Weaver. He was then living in the home of Samuel and Margaret Shields, both 21 years of age and also b. in Ireland.

William H. Prentice appears in the 1910 census in Vernon, Tolland Co., CT, as b. c. 1881, Ireland (the 1930 census says Northern Ireland), with his wife, Sarah, b. c. 1883, CT. It says he immmigrated in 1894 at the age of 13. He was then a Grocery Store Clerk. No children are shown.

He appears in the 1920 Manchester, Hartford Co., CT census as b. c. 1881, Ireland, and immigrated in 1890. His occupation was "Travelling (salesman?)". Also shown are his wife and children.

He appears in the 1930 Manchester census as b. c. 1881 in Northern Ireland, as were his parents. It says he immigrated in 1903, perhaps a confusion with his Naturalization year. His occupation was "Commercial Travel, Biscuit Specialty Co."

He m. Sarah, b. c. 1883 in CT. Childen per 1920 census:

  1. William H. Prentice Jr., b. c. 1911, CT. He may be the William H. Prentice shown in the 1930 Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH census as an unmarried bachelor, age 19, whose father was born in Ireland and his mother in CT. It is unclear whether he is the William, H. Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 9 Oct 1912, obtained his SS# in PA, and d. 10 Feb 2006 in Olmsted Falls, Cuyahoga Co., OH.

The SSDI also shows Eleanor H. Prentice, perhaps his wife, who was b. 8 Aug 1917, obtained her SS# in MA, and d. 21 Feb 2003 in Olmsted Falls, Cuyahoga Co., OH.

Who are William H. Prentice's Parent?

We note that there is a William Prentice shown in Ancestry.com as b. c. 1880 in Ireland. However, "William Prentice" is such a common name that additional research is needed to determine if he is "William H. Prentice."

We will be posting an article to our Winter 2010 newsletter about his father, William John Prentice, b. c. 1857, Ireland.
