Thomas and Agnes Prentice of Scotland and NZ

Thomas and Agnes Prentice of Scotland and NZ
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2002 and Revised 23 Jan 2009

We are helping Linda D. Canning in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far.

1. Unknown Prentice had at least 2 children

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. 1886. . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Agnes Prentice, b. c. 1892-95. . . . . . . . . [3]

2. Thomas Prentice, b. 1886.

He m. Miss Murray, sister to David Murray, #3 below. Known children:

  1. John Prentice b. 31 Jul 1914 and d. Feb 1979.
  2. Thomas "Tommy" Prentice, b. 13 Apr 13 1920 and d. Aug 1979. He m. Rosamond Grant who was b. 1921 and d. Feb 1979.
  3. Mary "Sis" Prentice, living in 2002 and in her 90s.

3. Agnes Prentice

She m. David Murray, brother of Miss Murray #2 above, b. 1892.

Who are the Parents of Thomas (b, 1886) and Agnes (b. 1892-1895)?

We reviewed the 1901 Scotland census and looked for a family with those 2 children of those names in that birth year sequence. We found at least 1 family, that of Andrew Prentice (b. c. 1842, Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire) and his wife, Mary (b. c. 1852, Fettercairn, Kincardineshire).

Andrew Prentice appears to be the same person as #3v in our Spring 2006 article entitled Philip Prentice of Barlae, Haddington, Scotland . However the spouse of Andrew's son, Thomas, has a different name; in this article she is called "Miss Murray" and in the other article she is called "Martha McNab."

Further investigation is needed.
