By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2002 and Revised 25 Oct 2009

Kerry Prentice brings to our attention the family of Samuel Prentice in the 1881 East Anglia census. To that family we have added additional information about his father:

1. John Prentice, b. c. 1792, Oundle, Northamptonshire, England. He appears in the 1861 census in Oundle, Northamptonshire, England, with his son, Samuel, and Samuel's family. John had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1825 in Oundle, Northampton, England. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. Samuel Prentice. We have conflicting information about his birth. (1) One source says he was b. c. 1825 in Oundle, Northampton, England. (2) A 2nd source at Ancestry.com says he was b. 1819 in Pritt Well, Essex, and d. Dec 1893 in Middlesex, Surrey. He d. before the 1901 census ;in Surbiton, Surrey, as his wife appears there as a widow.

He appears in the 1861 and 1881 Oundle census living at North Street "Carpenters Arms", Oundle. He was a Cabinet Maker & Publican. Also shown are his wife and children. 1891 census in Kingston, Surrey.

He m. Ann (surname unknown) or Ann Eliza Firmin on 10 Sep 1857, Camden, Middlesex. She was either b. 11 Mar 1831, Camden , Middlesex, or was b. c. 1830, at Stanton On Wye, Hereford, England. She is said to have d. 1901.

We also have conflicting information about their children. One source identifies their children as:

  1. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1856 at Oundle, a Schoolmistress.
  2. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1858, Oundle.
  3. Ann Prentice, b. c. 1859, Oundle.

  8. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1870, Oundle.
  9. Katie B. Prentice, b. c. 1872, Oundle.

However, another source identifies their children as:

  1. Ernest Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1860, St. Pancras, London. 1891 at home in Kingston, Surrey. 1901 at home in Surbiton, Surrey.
  2. Emma Prentice, b. 1862, St. Pancras, London. 1891 at home in Kingston, Surrey. 1901 at home in Surbiton, Surrey.

      3. (dau.) Prentice. She m. Dalton and had 2 sons and 1 daughter.
    2. Herbert Prentice, b. 1867, Paddington, Middlesex. He appears in the 1901 census in Kensington, ` London, with his wife, H. M., and daughter, R. M. Prentice, b. c. 1900, Kensington, London.

    5. Rose Margaret Prentice, b. 1875, Surbiton, Surrey. 1901 at home in Surrbiton.

Who is John Prentice's wife, and who are his parents?

John Prentice, b. c. 1792, Oundle, does not appear in the 1841 or 1851 census.

We do note, however, that the IGI shows that Samuel Prentice m. Sarah England on 11 Aug 1778 in Oundle, Northampton, England. Investigation is continuing to determine whether they are John Prentice's parents, an interesting possibility since John named a son, "Samuel.".
