By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2001 and Revised 14 Jan 2015

Update of 25 Dec 2006: Subject to further investigation, he is tentatively identified as the same Robert Prentice who is #5.1in our Spring 2002 article about William Prentice of Carstairs, Lanark, Scotland.

We are helping Adele Hubbell in tracing the her Prentice family tree. Here is what we have so far:

1. Robert Prentice was probably b. c. 1790-1806 and perhaps in the vicinity of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

He m. Marian Aitken/Aiken and they had 1 or more children, including:

  1. David Prentice, b. Jan 1829. . . . . . . . . [2]

2. David Prentice, b. Jan 1829 – his marriage certificate shows him as aged 27 years i.e. on the 23 March 1855.

He m. Marian Frood on 23 Mar 1855, Carstairs, Lanark, Scotland. She was b. Nov 1835, Scotland. By email of 5 Oct 2003, William Frood advises that Marian is the daughter of John Frood (b. 1785, son of Alexander Frood and Marion Syminton of Carmichael, m. 1818) and Elizabeth Smith. Alexander Frood was b. 1743 and m. 1768. For additional Frood genealogy see James Prentice of Carluke , Fall 2003, Footnote 1.

Marian emigrated to America and is living with her son, Thomas, in the 1900 census in Coatesville, Chester Co., PA. Their children included (per Christine Hadden's email of 19 Oct 2001):

  1. Robert Prentice, b. 19 Aug 1856 Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland

By email of 29 Aug 2009 we received an email from William Mason which reads, in part, as follows:

I am an Honorary Member of a Masonic Lodge in Hamilton, Scotland (i.e. Lodge Hamilton No.233 on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland) which is to celebrate it’s 200th Anniversary next year and am collating information suitable for inclusion in the Lodge History which incidentally is a non-commercial project being undertaken by one of the Past Master’s of the Lodge (Bro John PRENTICE, Past Master – No Relation).

I understand John Frood PRENTICE or MILLER, who was born in Hamilton on the 25th December 1988) may have been a Member of the Lodge before he emigrated and subsequently became a Rear Admiral in the US Navy.

I have therefore been carrying out some research into the PRENTICE family, mainly on the Web, at the Local Library and through the General Registrars Office in Scotland (GROS) (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk), to try and confirm this. As a result I have collated a considerable amount of information – including that contained in an Article entitled “Robert Prentice, Scotland” published by the Editor of the Prentice Newsletter (http://www.prenticenet.com/news/2001/robert_prentice_scotland_.htm) – and have included the full details of what I have obtained in the Notes attached to this letter. I hope they may be of some assistance to you in researching your Family history. As for your Grandfather (John Frood PRENTICE or MILLER), I have found that:

    • He was Born on the 25/12/1888 (2:05pm) in McAlpines Building, Beckford Street, Hamilton. His Birth was Registered by his Grandfather – Alexander McNEILL. (Source: GROS 1889, RD 647/00 Ent.0042 – Copy of record obtained).

    • His Mother (Jessie Campbell PRENTICE (m/s McNEIL) remarried a James MILLER on the 28/10/1890 at 2 Baillies Causeway, Hamilton. (Source: GROS 1890, RD 647/00 Ent. 0225 – Copy obtained).

    • In the 1891 Census for Hamilton, he is shown as 2 years old and living with his grandparents at 2 Baillies Causeweay, Hamilton – See Notes on Alexander McNEIL).

    • According to the Prentice Newsletter Rev. 25 Dec 2006, he emigrated to Mc Keesport, Pennsylvania in 1905. (He must have returned to Scotland to join the Lodge in 1911 - See entry below).

    • He was Initiated into Lodge Hamilton No.233 on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of Scotland on the 10 May 1911, was Passed to the 2nd or Fellow of Craft Degree on the 24 May 1911 and was Raised to the high and sublime Degree of Master Masons on the 7th June 1911. In his application to join the Lodge he gave his age as 22 years, his Occupation as a Marine Engineer and his address as: Millerston, Bothwell Road, Hamilton where I believe his Mother and Step Father were living at that time..

    • On the 2nd July 1911, a John F.P. MILLER (presumably the same person as John Frood Prentice) arrived at New York (from Glasgow) on the “California”. The Ship’s Passenger List shows him as 22 years of age, his Nationality as US Citizen and his Place of Residence as Mc Keesport, Pa.

    • With him on the Ship was another passenger – James MILLER, aged 25 years of age, his Nationality as ‘Scotch’ and his Place of Residence as Newtongrange, Scotland. He may be related – possibly a half brother). (Source: www.ellisisland.org)

    • He had one child – June Adele MILLER who was born on the 04/06/1919 in San Diego, California. (Source: Obituary of CRAWFORD, June Adele Miller who died on 31/08/1994 (aged 75 years) in San Diego, California in the Eagle Valley Enterprise dated 8 September 1994. (www.cogenweb.com/eagle/c-obits.html) She is referred to as as being the only child of Admiral and Mrs John F.P. MILLER – Copy obtained).

    • 1941 – He was a Lieutenant Commander and USN Repair Officer on the USS Medusa during an Attack of Pearl Harbour on the 7 December 1941. Her Commanding Officer was ashore a the time and Lt Cmdr John F.P. MILLER took command of the Ship and was later commended for his excellent work in directing the efficient fighting of the Ship during the attack. (Sources: www.history.navy.mil/docs/wwii/pearl/ph52.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/USS Medusa (AAR-1).)

    • He died on the 12 June 1963 (no further details known) although Records from Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery show: “MILLER, John Frood, b.12/25/1888, d. 06/12/1963, RADM USN, Plot: O.S. 76-A, bur. 06/18/1963”. (I presume “RADM” means “Rear Admiral”. (www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Etx/Lee/cemetery/knobbsp.htm)

8. Erskine Maiden, b 10 Jul 1891, PA, and d. Aug 1967 in OH. Not in 1910 census. He appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH, with his wife and living in the home of Annie Fowler, a widow, (b. c. 1870, England, with both parents b. in England) where he is called a son in law.

He m. Irene Fowler, b. c. 1894, OH, dau. of Annie Fowler, above. No children shown in the 1920 or 1930 census.

Living with them in 1930 is David Williams, b. c. 1885, OH, and called Erskine's Uncle.
