Introduction: With the help of Ian Prentice, Lizz Jeffery, John Taylor, Kim Schlotterbeck, Ron Stretton, Sean Prentice, Joan Marshall, Marilyn Foster, Lisa Paddle, Ancestry.com, the IGI and the census records of England and the United States, we have prepared the following tentative family tree for Henry Prentice of Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, but researchers are advised that they should independently confirm all links.

This is one of our largest Prentice family trees. It contains information about those members with roots in England as well as additional information about their many descendants who have emigrated to Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

He m. Elizabeth before 1667. She d. in 1714. Thomas and Elizabeth's children included:

The IGI says that he m. (apparently as a 1st wife) Elizabeth Green on 4 Oct 1739 in Cardington.

An entry in Ancestry.com says he m. (apparently as a 2nd wife) Ann Grindridge in Willington in 1744. Ann is called Ann Crendige in the IGI. Willington lies about 5 miles east of Bedford. By 1746 they were living Cople, about a miles or so south of Willington. She was b. c. 1724 in Gt. Barford, Bedford, and d. 25 May 1795 in Cople, Bedford. Children:

1. Susan Prentice, b. 12 Oct 1746, Cople, Bedfordshire. She m. in 1769, but the name of her husband has not yet been determined.

We also found in the IGI a Jane Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1810-25 (no husband named) who had a daughter, Sarah Prentice, who m. Robert Burgess on 5 Aug 1845 Oakley. So far we have not been able to identify Jane's parents. By email of 4 Nov 2003, Colin Dawson advises that he located a death for "Sarah Burgess (Prentice)" in the 4th Qtr 1868, aged 44 years (Cert. 3b 191). Robert Burgess than appears to have then married Elizabeth Smith who may have been the widow of a John Smith.

• there were 2 men named John Prentice who married different women (one Lucy and the other Ruth Pugh),
• or whether there was only 1 John Prentice and the two women are either the same person with one name being wrong, or perhaps 1st and 2nd wives.

Pending the discovery of additional documentation, Abraham is likely the Abraham Prentice sought by Kay Prentice who was b. in Moggerhanger, Bedfordshire, about 1834. He married Mary Ann (Woolnough) Cameron, a widow, in St. Mary's Anglican Church, in Timaru, New Zealand, on 15 Mar 1873 (per Wedding Certificate in possession of a correspondent ; email, 26 Jan 2003). Mary Ann also emigrated from Bedfordshire. She was born in Hoxbury, Gloucestershire in 1840, and died 18 Jun 1929 aged 89 years. Abraham's occupation at the time of his marriage is is listed as a shoemaker. They lived at Pleasant Point in the South Island which is near to Timaru where he was married. Known children:

He m. Sarah Montague. We have conflicting information about her date and place of birth:

1. One source says she was b. 1 Jan 1852, Crayford, Kent, England.
2. The 1910 Corning, Tehama Co., CA, census she was b. c. 1853 in England, as were her parents.
3. However, the 1920 Corning, Tehama Co., CA, census says she was b. c. 1854 in Ireland, as were her parents.
4. She does not appear in the 1930 Tehama Co. census.

In any event, she is said to have d. 2 Jun 1932, Santa Rosa, CA, and that she is interred Willows Cemetery, Willows, CA.

George and Sarah sailed to New Zealand on the Opawa. It sailed on 7 Sep 1878 from Plymouth, England. On 5 Dec 1878 it "stood in towards Timaru, unsafe" and on 7 Dec 1878 arrived at Port Lyttelton with 290 souls on board. The passenger list indicated they had a ten-year-old child with them named A. Prentice. Amy Prentice (b. 18 Jun 1869 Sharnbrook, England) was the daughter of Sarah Ann Prentice who was George's sister. Amy was age 9 at that time and might have been raised as their child. It is not yet known whether she remained in NZ or returned to England.

Sometime after 1905, George moved to California where he appears in the 1920 census in Corning, Tehama Co., CA, with his wife and daughter, Margurette.

4. Charles William Prentice (he went by William Charles), b. 22 May 1886, Waitohi, New Zealand; int. Willows Cemetery, Willows, CA. Not in 1920 census. He appears in the 1930 census in Twp. 4, Glenn Co., CA, as William C. Prentice, b. c. 1889, NZ, with his wife, Hazel G., b. c. 1890, PA, with both parents b. in Germany. Children:
   1. Irene G. Prentice, b. c. 1917, CA. At home in Glenn Co. in 1930.
   2. Alfred W. Prentice, b. c. 1919, CA. At home in Glenn Co. in 1930. Not in the SSDI as of Feb 2008.

5. Ethel Mary Prentice (or May Prentice Shaw), b. 13 March 1887, New Zealand and d. 8 March 1924, Woodland, CA; int. Willows Cemetery, Willows, CA. She m. Herbert Shaw. Child of Ethel:
   1. Margaurete Ellen Prentice, (raised by Sarah) b. 28 March 1904 at Raetihi, New Zealand. She is buried in Sonoma, CA in the Mountain Cemetery under the name of Margaret Ellen Tate.
