John Thomas Prentice of England, Australia

John Thomas Prentice of England and Australia
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2001 and Revised 13 Mar 2013

We are helping David Musgrave, Lindsay Dunn and Marion O'Shea in their efforts to trace their Prentice ancestry. The tree we have so far is set out below:

1. John Thomas Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1745-55 and d. in 1832. In 1799 there were two members of the same company of the NSW Corps by the name of Prentice: Lieutenant (later, Captain) John Thomas Prentice and Thomas Prentice. It is unclear what their relationship is, if any. David Musgrave suggests that John Thomas Prentice is the father of Thomas. Tenatively, we have identified John Thomas Prentice as having Thomas as his son:

  1. (perhaps) Thomas Prentice b. c. 1775. . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. Thomas Prentice, was b. c. 1775 and at an unknown location and d. 9 Jul 1843 in Maitland, NSW, age about 71 years. Thomas came to NSW aboard the "Minerva", accompanied by his wife, leaving Cork, Ireland in 1799 and arriving in Sydney on 11 Jan 1800. He was a member of the NSW Corps as an Ensign in 1789, Lt. in 1791 and Capt. in 1798. Marion O'Shea's email of 19 Jun 2009 refers to him as:

. . .Thomas Prentice of the 102nd Regiment of Foot, commonly known as the Rum Corps. He was with a detachment of soldiers guarding a famous batch of prisoners from Ireland, those who had been convicted of taking part in the Irish Rebellion of 1798."

A short summary about the Rum Corps can be found in Wikipedia as follows:

The New South Wales Corps (aka The Rum Corps) was formed in England in 1789 as a permanent regiment to relieve the marines who had accompanied the First Fleet to Australia. The regiment, led by Major Francis Grose, consisted of three companies. Due to the remoteness and unpopularity of the posting they were composed of officers on half pay, troublemakers, soldiers paroled from military prisons and those with few prospects, who were gambling on making a life for themselves in the new colony. The regiment began arriving as guards on the Second Fleet in 1790. Major Grose arrived in Sydney in 1792 to take command and assume role of Lieutenant-Governor of the colony. A fourth company was raised from those marines wishing to remain in NSW under Captain George Johnston, who had been Governor Phillip’s aide-de-camp.

Additional information in www.parliament.nsw tells a bit more about the Rum Corps:

The military force stationed in NSW from 1792-1810 was a specially raised unit, the NSW Corps. They were nicknamed the 'Rum Corps' because of their monopoly in trading in spirits. From 1806, the Governor of NSW was Captain (later Admiral) William Bligh. Bligh, a talented and strong naval officer, has been somewhat villified as an excessive disciplinarian in the accounts of the mutiny that took place on his ship, HMS Bounty, in 1789. He recognised that the officers, in particular, of the NSW "Rum" Corps were an entrenched power acting in their own interests. In particular, Bligh saw that the small, non-military farmers were being disriminated against by the Corps. As Bligh attempted to assert his legitimate authority, the Corps officers clashed with the Governor over several issues including his support of small settlers and tensions grew. On January 26, 1808, the troops, led by Lt-Col. George Johnston, arrested Bligh and took over control of the Colony. A number of Bligh supporters were arrested, some spending the next two years in convict work gangs. This was Australia's only military coup. The NSW Corps remained in control until 1810 when the British government sent a new Governor (Macquarie) with his own regiment, disbanding the NSW Corps.

In NSW Births, deaths and marriage records he is referred to as Thomas. He is mentioned in a number of despatches; he was on Norfolk Island from 1790-1793, returned to England at some date after 1797 (and perhaps after 1801) and returned to Australia in 1808.

In an email of 6 Feb 2003, David Musgrave relates the following incident: In 1810, Thomas Prentice was arrested for the theft of 40 gallons of wine which, incredibly enough, he drank, assisted by a female companion who had joined him on the road and who Thomas passed off as his wife (he was already married and had at least 4, and perhaps 5, children); they also gave away some of the wine Parramatta. Thomas was sentenced to transportation to Norfolk Island, where John Thomas (#1, above) at the time was a Captain. It is unclear whether Thomas was transported to Norfolk Island; but if not, it may have been because Captain Prentice intervened on Thomas' behalf.

He served in the East Coast War; during the Te Kooti revolt; and afterwards in Taranaki, at Wairoa and at Lake Waikaremoana. His first wife was Keita Terapu, of Anaura. A son Charles (born in 1868) became noted for his disregard of danger in the exciting sport of harpooning sharks. In February, 1927, he gave a thrilling display of his fearlessness at Wainui in the presence of a large gathering. A full account of the daring episode appears in The Wide World Magazine (September, 1927). Wading into the sea up to his shoulders, he attracted the attention of some sharks by throwing pieces of stingray to them. Soon he was ringed by four of the monsters. He harpooned the largest, which was believed to be one that had been nicknamed “Kruger.” No time was lost by his helpers on shore in landing it by means of the rope attached to the harpoon. It was 10 ft. 3 in. long and weighed just over 400 lbs. One of Captain Ferris's grandsons (Lieutenant-Colonel James Ferris) was awarded the M.B.E. decoration. He served in the First Great War and during the 1939–45 conflict he held an important administrative post in New Zealand in connection with the Maori war effort. His death occurred in 1948. Captain Ferris, who resettled in New South Wales in 1911, died there in 1913.

. . . James Nixon Brunker is considered to be one of the "Fathers of the Australian Constitution". He was the Minister for Lands on Henry Parkes' NSW Government, and actually governed the state while Henry Parkes was away in England for a period of time. His role in Parliament led hime to be involved in the writing of the Australian Constitution leading to the federation of Australia in 1901.
