Alice Prentice of Melbourne, Australia

Alice Prentice of Melbourne, Australia
Winter 2001 and Revised 6 Nov 2004

Update of 6 Nov 2004: Unknown Prentice and his wife, Miss Bernhard, are quite likely the same persons as William and Elizabeth Prentis who are #4ii in our Spring 2001 article about Joseph Prentis of S. Benfleet and Grays, Essex and Alice is likely their daughter.
Original Article: We are helping Kayleen Tier in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. (unknown) Prentice was probably b. c. 1840-64. He m. Miss Bernhard (see woman standing in photo, below). Their children included:

  1. Alice Prentice, b. 1885. . . . . . . [2]
  2. Emma Prentice, b. Sep 1891 (per Ian Prentice, email, 8 Nov 2001). She had a shop in Grays, Essex Co., England and remained there.
  3. Mary Ann Prentice, b. Dec 1895 (per Ian Prentice, above_. She emigrated to Australiaand lived/died in Maribynong in the western suburbs of Melbourne. She had a daughter:
    1. Mary (surname unknown). She died in childbirth.
  4. (son) Prentice. He emigrated to America.
  5. (son) Prentice. He emigrated to Canada and married Eve (surname unknown).
  6. (son) Prentice. He might have emigrated to Germany.
  7. Samual Thomas Prentice, b. Sep 1893 (per Ian Prentice, above). Said to have served in the British Army in in WW I and may have settled in France.

In addition to the foregoing information, Ian Prentice has located 3 more birth records in the St. Catherine's index, 1 or more of whom may be the unnamed sons who are identified above:

  1. William Thomas Prentice, b. Jun 1887.
  2. Frederick James Prentice, b. Sep 1887.
  3. William Prentice, b. Sep 1887.

Left Photo: Photo of Alice (Prentice) Richards, #2, below, with her mother holding Kayleen's grandmother, Alice Richards, as a baby.

2. Alice Prentice, Kayleen's great-grandmother, may have been born 1885 or Aug 1886 and roughly about 1890-1910. She may have been born in, or near, Grays, Essex County England, which lies at the mouth of the Thames River, a few miles south of Chelmaford and a few miles east if London.

Ian Prentice suggests that Alice may be related to the family of Joseph Prentis of Grays. For more information about Joseph, see Joseph Prentice of S. Benfleet and Grays in our Spring 2001 issue.

Her father's name is not yet known, but her mother's maiden name was Bernhard. Alice and her family lived in Melbourne (Newport), Australia, and she may have died Jan 1981 in Hazeldines nursing home in Williamstown, Melbourne, Victoria.

Alice married Alfred Richards, probably in Essex County and emigrated to Australia about 1915. They had 1 more children, including:

  1. Alice Richards, b. bef. 1915, probably in Essex County, England.
