We are helping William Brymer in tracing his Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:
1. John Robert "Robert" Prentice was b. c. 1825, Dalserf, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He does not appear either as John or "Robert" in the 1841 census. John and his family appear in the 1851 census in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Not in 1861 census.
He m. Lilias Henderson. She was b. c. 1823, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. They had at least two children:
- Robert Prentice, b. c. 1850, Lesmahagow (per 1851 census) and chr. 24 Feb 1850 at Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland.
He m. Alice Mary Kilry on 12 Feb 1889 in Corchester, Dorset, England. She was b. 1861They had
at 1 or more children:
- Alice Emily Prentice, b. 7 Feb 1891 at 136 Lowaters, Hamilton,
Lanarkshire. She m. John Brown who was b. c. 1888, son of William Brown and Marion Mitchel Watson.
They had 1 or more children, including:
- Marion Mitchel Brown Rattray per Ancestry.com: World Tree , b. 14 Nov 1913. It is unclear why she is shown with the surname, Rattray. She was b. 14 Nov 1913 and d. 1 Apr 1990, Dundee, Scotland. She m. Donald Dewer Strewart. He was b. 18 Jun 1911 and d. in Dundee, Scotland. They had 4 children surnamed Stewart.
- Alice Emily Prentice, b. 7 Feb 1891 at 136 Lowaters, Hamilton,
Lanarkshire. She m. John Brown who was b. c. 1888, son of William Brown and Marion Mitchel Watson.
They had 1 or more children, including:
- Adam Prentice, chr., 4 Feb 1852, Dalserf.
The 1841 census does not show any "Robert" Prentice, nor does it show any John Prentice as a resident of Dalserf (the 1841 census does not provide villages of birth but only counties).
The 1841 census does, however, show 2 men named John Prentice living in Lesmahagow where his son, Robert, was b. in 1850:
- John Prentice, b. c. 1824, Lanarkshire and in 1850 living in Lesmahagow. He was then 17 years of age and apparently living away from home; his parents are not identified.
- John Prentice, b. c. 1826, Lanarkshire and in 1850 living in Lesmahagow. His parents are not shown, but 2 apparent brothers are shown in the household: (1) Ebenezer Prentice, b. c. 1816, Lanarkshire, and (2) Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1821, Lanarkshire.
