1. James Prentice was b. c. 1868 in Bo'ness, Scotland and was living in Armadale, Scotland at the time he emigrated to the United States. Armadale lies about 30 miles WSW of Edinburgh and about 15 miles south of Bo'ness which lies on the south coast of the Firth of Forth. James arrived on 30 Apr 1907 in the Port of New York aboard the "Columbia" which had sailed from Glasgow. At that time he was age 39, 5' ", with grey eyes and brown hair.
Ellis Island Records show he was accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth, b. c. 1869 in Armadale, Scotland, age 38, 5' 4" with brown hair and blue eyes, and son:
- James Prentice, b. c. 1896, Armadale, Scotland, age 11. He might be the same James Prentice who appears
in the 1930 & 1940 census in Haverford, Delaware Co., PA with his wife, Ella May, b. c. 1906, PA, and daughter:
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1928-9, PA.
James was joined by his sisters who left Glasgow aboard the "Columbia" and arrived in NY on 24 Sep 1907. They were:
- Bethia Prentice, b. c. 1884, Scotland.
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1879, Scotland,
The sisters identified a brother who remained in Scotland: John Prentice, 2 Craig Terrace, Blackridge, Scotland.
Although confirmation is still needed, it seems probable that James Prentice is the James Prentice, son of James Prentice and Ann Hastie, Family #5 who appear in our Spring 2003 article about the various Prentice families of Bo'ness .
