28. James Franklin PRENTICEwas born on Jan 3 1857 in Alabama. He died on Mar 25 1924 in Marshall Co., Alabama. He took a train to Birmingham to have an operation.  After the operation, he returned by train to Guntersville and walked 12 miles to his home near Arab, AL.  He died shortly therafter from complications arising from his surgury.
He was a justice of the peace, a deacon of the Brashiers Chapel Methodist Church as well as well as being the church's Sunday school suuperintendent and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Arab. Seems to have been a rather inflexable person in view of the fact that he bannished his daughter, Millie, from his sight when she eloped with a man under the yoke of the demon alcohol.  He never saw or talked to his daughter after that .
In the "Arab Historian", an article stated that he owned and operated a griss mill on Beach Creek. The 1880 Alabama Census, Blount County shows him living in the Red Hill Community.In the book, "HISTORY OF THE PRENTICE FAMILY", James bought 80 acres in the 1880s from William Nabors and lived there until 1890, Sold the place to Rev. E. T. Presnall . The house on that place was a log cabin which was still standing when the book was written in the 1900's.  James F. installed and operated a griss mill on Beach Creek powered by a water wheel. Sold the mill to John Teal. Sold his home place purchased after the home, to West Claiborn. He served as Justice of the Peace in the Warrenton Beat while he was living in this home. After the sale of this home, he bought a farm from Robert (Bob) Thompson that bordered the city limits on the east side of Arab, AL. His son Daniel W. Prentice inherited and lived at this place until 1955 or so.  New Canaan was in Marshall County before Cullman County was organized. At that time, Blount County extended to the Arab City limit. Mr. Elliot,  Union soldier, liked the area when he passed through it so much that he came back after the Civil War and homesteaded a 120 acres in Arab, AL.

James F. was married to Martha Jane NABORS (daughter of Josiah NABORS 2nd husband and Sarah Heaten JENKINS) on Feb 7 1878 in MARSHALL COUNTY, ALABAMA.Martha Jane NABORS was born about 1859 in Alabama. She was buried in 1941 in BRASHIERS CHAPEL METHODIST, MARSHALL CO., AL. She died on Sep 21 1941 in MARSHALL COUNTY, ALABAMA. James Franklin PRENTICE and Martha Jane NABORS had the following children:

child79 v. James Cleveland PRENTICE was born in Nov 1888 in Alabama. He was buried in 1900 in BRASHIERS CHAPEL METHODIST, MARSHALL CO., AL. He died on Aug 18 1900 in MARSHALL CO., AL.

child81 vii. Tempie Lula PRENTICE was born on Jul 29 1894 in Marshall County, AL. She was buried in 1914 in Brashier Chapel Methodist, Marshall Co., Ala.. She died on Jun 29 1914 in Marshall County, AL. Cecil Prentice Sr. remembers that she was dating Ed Presnell. Might have
married her had she not been sick and died. Doesn't remember. Lots of
folks had "the yellow fever or TB". Killed a lot of people in that areay
