Richard S. Prentiss of Charleston, SC

In checking the South Carolina Census Records Indexes, we find Richard S. Prentiss, in the 1900 Charleston, Charleston Co., SC census. He was age 15, born August, 1884 and was living with his mother, Mary P. Prentiss, born December, 1851. Mary would have been about 33 when Richard was born. No other persons are shown in the household.

We do not presently have a copy of the 1890 SC census, when Richard would have been about 6, and which perhaps would have identified his father.

Mary might be the wife of Otis Dunkin Prentiss, b. 28 Jan 1833. We do not presently know the name of his wife, but he is thought to have had at least two children.

Mary might also be the wife of Leighton Prentiss, b. 9 Feb 1852. We have no further information about him.

The 1910 Colleton Co., SC shows a Phoebe Prentiss, b. c. 1853 and her son, Richard Prentiss, age 25, born c. 1885. They may be the same persons, and the middle name of the 1900 Mary P. Prentiss may be Phoebe.

No Mary P. Prentiss or Richard S. Prentiss appear in the 1920 census, but a Richard R. Prentiss, age 34, b. c. 1886 does appear in the Charleston Co. census with his wife, Claudia W., b. c. 1889 in SC. Also in the household was Phoebe Prentiss, b. c. 1852, probably his mother. It seems likely he is the same Richard.
