James Prentiss of Greene Co., Mississippi
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 1998 and Revised 2 Jul 2009

Update: 3 Aug 1999: James Prentiss is the son of William A. Prentiss who is discussed in an article in the Fall 1999 Prentice Newsletter. That article now replaces this article.

1. James Prentiss was b. c. 1840-41, in MS. He appears in the 1860 Licksville, Greene Co., MS census with his wife.

He m. Sarah, b. about 1843. In 1860 they did not yet have children. By the 1870 census, they had children:

  1. Ginsie Prentiss, b. c. 1861, MS (female)
  2. Joseph Prentiss, b. c. 1866, MS
  3. Mary Prentiss, b. c. 1867, MS
  4. James Prentiss, b. c. 1869, MS

Although not yet confirmed, James Prentiss might be the same person as James Prentice, age 9 and born in MS, who appears in the 1850 Perry County, MS census with his siblings, Catherine (7) and Andrew (9). No parents are shown for the three children. Perry County abuts Greene County; that fact, plus the fact that there were so few Prentiss families in MS at that time, gives some weight to the thought that they are the same person.

Also living in Greene County at the 1870 census was J. A. Prentiss, age 21 (b. c. 1849, MS). He appears unmarried and working on a farm. Although not yetconfirmed, the fact that J.A. was only 8 years younger than James suggests the possibility that J.A. and James were brothers. J. A. subsequently appears in the 1900 Greene Co. Census as J. A. Printis (note the different surname spelling), age 51 (b. Sept 1848, MS) with his wife, Elizabeth S. (Kirkwood?), age 22, b. Jan 1878, MS, and children:

  1. Hardy A. Printis, b. Dec 1894, MS
  2. Hattie Printis, b. May 1897

It seems likely that the family of James and Sarah appear in the 1880 Greene Co. census with a somewhat different name structure. The head of the family is Sally Prentis, b. c. 1842; the birth date is close and "Sally" might be a nickname for Sarah. No husband is shown. As to the children, the ages of 3 oldest 4 children's age are a close match, and that of the 4th misght be a transcription error of an age 9 for age 5. Also, as is the sequence of daughter-son-daughter-son:

  1. Emaline(?) Prentis,b. c. 1866 (1861?) (female)
  2. I. L. Prentis, b. c. 1867 (male)
  3. M. M. Prentis, b. c. 1868 (female) (corresponds to Mary)
  4. James Pentis, b. c. 1870 (male) (corresponds to James)
  5. S. M. Prentis, b. c. 1873. (female)
  6. Elisa Prentis, b. c. 1875 (female)
  7. Blanton Prentis, b. c. 1877 (male)

The 1900 Greene Co. census appears to confirm "Sally" as the same person as Sarah, although the ages are all off by 5-6 years.

Yet another person living in Greene County in 1880 was Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1850 in MS. Although the surname has a different spelling, he might be a brother of J. A. and/or James.
