Elisha Prentice of Stafford, Genesee Co., NY
Spring 1998 and Revised 10 Apr 2006
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor

10 APRIL 2006: SPECIAL NOTICE TO CONNIE BIRD: Please contact me by email about a 9 Apr 2006 contact from Elizabeth Witter.

Update: 7 Apr 1998: By E-mail of 7 Apr 1998, Connie Bird advises she had copies of 1832 court documents identifying Maryette and Lucy Ann Prentice as infant daughters of Charles Prentice, deceased, and appointing Elisha Prentice, Charles' father, as their Guardian. Charles' son, Daniel, is a signatory on a surety bond relating to the appointment.

Update: 8 May 1998: By E-mail of 8 May 1998, Patty Hankins advises she has a copy of "Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice: Their Ancestors and Descendants" by Charles Call. Although the book has no documentation, it shows Deborah Prentice as b. 4 Apr 1833 at Franklin, Dale Co., PA. She is the daughter of Southwick Prentice who appears in our PRENTICE book as 234/9v5a. She married Albert Coe on 31 Dec 1850 in LeRoy, Genesee Co., NY. He is the son of Ezra Coe and Elizabeth Ann Sornberger. Children of Deborah and Albert were:

  • Mary Isadore Coe
  • Ezra Frank Coe
  • Elizabeth Ann Coe
  • Carrie Evelyn Coe
  • Clara A. Coe

Original Article: Are Maryette, Elizabeth and Deborah granddaughters of Elisha Prentice?

We are helping Connie Bird in tracing the ancestry of her MARYETTE PRENTICE who was born 27 Oct 1828 in Stafford. She married Seth Kellog 28 Dec 1848, perhaps at Stafford; the minister was Rev. Mor(?) Caton.

So far as now known, there was only main Prentice family living in Stafford; that of ELISHA PRENTICE and his wife, Sally Howard, and those of his children. Elisha and his family may be found in our PRENTICE book at 283/79, et seq. Elisha had six (6) sons, two of whom might be the father of Maryette, Elizabeth and Deborah Prentice:

  1. Leonard Prentice was b. c. 1799 and died 13 or 15 Jul 1828. We have no information whether he married prior to his death, but see the discussion about his brother, Charles, below.

  2. Daniel Prentice's first known marriage was to Martha/Patty Clapp on 8 Nov 1832, so he seems not to be the father of Maryette. However, the next child we have for him is Martha Prentice, b. c. 1837 at Stafford. Since it is somewhat unusual in that period to find a lapse of 5 years between children, it is possible that DEBORAH and/or ELIZABETH might be his.

  3. Charles Prentice was born 1804 and died in 1836. He married Nancy Gilbertson in 1827. We have no confirmed information whether he had children, but in the normal course of events would have had sons and daughters. He seems to be a likely candidate to be the father of Maryette, Elizabeth and/or Deborah.

In reviewing our files, we have a letter of 6 Dec 1996 to Jeff Trembath relating to his search for his DEBORAH PRENTICE (b. 1833) who married ALBERT COE in 1850 in Pavilion, Genesee Co., NY. DEBORAH, in the 1850 census, was living in the home of CAROLINE MILLS. One would suppose that Caroline Mills was either an aunt, or perhaps DEBORAH'S mother who had been widowed and perhaps remarried. Since Pavilion lies near Stafford, there is a chance that she may be Charles' daughter.

We also found an ELIZABETH A. PRENTICE (b. 1835) in the 1850 census living nearby in the family of CYRUS and OLIVE SPERRY. Although unconfirmed at this point, she, too, may be a sister of the above ELIZABETH and a daughter of Charles. Another possibility is that OLIVE SPERRY, b. 1823, may be a daughter of Charles' brother, Leonard, above.

Everything considered, there seems to be a possibility that MARYETTE, DEBORAH and ELIZABETH are all either sisters or cousins.
