1. Edward John Prentice, b. 6 Sep 1882, NY and d. Sep 1969 in Scotia, Schenectady Co., NY. 1900, 1910, 1920, 1925, Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY. In 1940 Edward was living in Scotia. When he registered for the WW I Draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was a "Tool Maker", medium height, blue eyes and dark brown hair.

In the 1900 census Edward was living in Schenectady as the nephew (not son or step-son) of Joseph J. Nerling (b. c. 1867, NY) and his wife, Ellen E. (b. c. 1865, French Canada). That 1900 census also says that Edward's father was born in Canada but his mother's place of birth was not given. It may be reasonable to infer that Edward's mother was born in French Canada, as was her apparent sister, Ellen E., and that both of Edward's parents may have remained in Canada.

He m. Mary, b. 7 Sep 1885, Ireland, and d. Jun 1975, Scotia. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. John Prentice was b. 13 Oct 1906, Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2 John Prentice was b. 13 Oct 1906, Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY, and d. Sep 1973 in Scotia, Schenectady Co., NY. 1910, 1920, 1925, Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY. It is unclear if he is the John T. Prentice who enlisted in the Army on 17 Nov 1942 as a Private, described as married, separated, with dependents.

He m. Elizabeth, b. c. 1908 in Brooklyn, NY. Her obituary, below, relates that she lived in, Scotia, NY, for many years, and later in Washington DC, where she d. 13 Jul 1998 of a stroke. Her obituary reads as follows:

Daily Gazette, The (Schenectady, NY) - Thursday, July 16, 1998 : Elizabeth Prentice

SCOTIA - Mrs. Elizabeth Prentice, 90, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Scotia, died Monday in Washington, D.C., as the result of a stroke. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Prentice lived in Scotia for many years before moving to her current residence.

For a number of years, she was a real estate agent in the Scotia-Schenectady area before retiring. In the 1930s, Mrs. Prentice was a professional radio vocalist.

Survivors include a daughter, Justine Diamond of Washington, D.C.; and a sister, Virginia Dunlap of Brecksville, Ohio.

Services will be held Friday at the Joseph Gawler & Sons Funeral Home.

Daughter of John and Elizabeth Prentice:

  1. Justine Prentice. She m. Mr. Diamond and in 1998 lived in Washington, D.C.

Who are Edward John Prentice's Parents?

All we know for now is that Edward's father was born c. 1860-1865 in Canada, and that his mother, apparently was a sister to Ellen E. who was b. c. 1865 in French Canada. Ellen does not appear in the 1881 Canada census. We know that perhaps by 1881, and by 6 Sep 1882 Ellen had emigrated to Schenectady, NY.

Investigation is continuing.
