If you have any information about the folks mentioned in this article, please send your information to us at the Prentice Newsletter. Be sure to give the full title and date of this article in the Subject line of the email.

A. James Prentice. We have have conflicting and unvarified birth dates for James:

  1. Kenneth Prentice indicates James was b. c. 1790[1]
  2. The IGI says he was b. 28 Feb 1785 but gives no source for such information.

Kenneth Prentice says that James appears in the 1810 census in Augusta, Oneida, NY; in the 1820 census in Pomfret (Laona), Chautauqua, NY; and in the 1830 census in Pomfret (Laona), Chautauqua, NY.

Note by Editor of 4 Jun 2000: In researching my email archives (32.89, 33/49, 38/63, 40/34, 44/28 and my earlier correspondence with Bonnie Prentice), so far as I can now determine, Bonnie Prentice, and perhaps Kenneth also, obtained that information in correspondence with a Mr. Wolf in in Kansas who said he obtained the information from "LDS records." Wolf, however, apparently didn't cite any specific LDS record, and I have not been able to locate any such record in my searching of the LDS IGI, the LDS Ancestral File, and the CT Barbour Index.

Further, in correspondence with Kenneth Prentice, he says he found James Prentice in the "U. S. census records (for) Oneida Co., NY in 1810." I checked that census index, but found no listing for a James Prentice. There is, however, a listing for a "J. Prentice" which might also stand for "John Prentice" which was a name then about 4 times more common than "James Prentice." "J. Prentice" might also be "Jared Prentice", family size unknown, who lived in Augusta at some unknown date before 1826. The 1810 "J. Prentice" family was shown as 10101-2010, indicating a son and 2 daughters all under 10 in 1810.

At this point, there is no firm documentation pertaining to James's date and place of birth, nor is there any documentation that he appears in the 1810 and 1820 census

James lived in Pomfret at least until 1830 when his family appeared in the census. In late 1836 or early 1837 the family moved to Ross Twp., Lake County, IN. We have no death record for him, but he might have died about 1838 when there was a severe drought and many deaths in the community.

He married Jerusha. The IGI says the marriage was on 10 Nov 1805 but does not cite the source of such information. Children:

By E-mail of March, 1998 Bonny Prentiss, wife of Homer Prentiss (#7a1, below) expresses a belief that Alfred is the son of Nahum Prentice. However, she says her identification is based on logic and not on documentation from any original record A discussion, and critique, about Bonnie's said identification can be found in Appendix B of our Robert Prentice eBook. Bonny died in 2017 and never did provide hard documentation for her belief.

Note: The following comes from Kenneth Richard Prentiss' book: The Prentiss Family in America 1620- 1968. Compiled in 1968: Alfred purchased land from Elisha Arnold and his wife Phoebe on April 21, 1855-SE corner of W1/2 of SW1/4 of Section 35, Twp. 36N, Range 7W, square piece of property for $150 cash.

Alfred James was said to have died from drowning and in his estate settlement held the land for auction December 1, 1856 appraised at $100. Alfred is buried in Robbins Cemetary on the gravel road N of Hwy. 6,W of Hwy. 149, Portage Twp., Porter County, Indiana. Edmund Dorr Wolf was the Administrator of Alfred James Prentice's Will. 7. Paul Homer Prentiss, b. 30 May 1926, Hobart, IN, and d. 14 Apr 2014, Little Rock, AR. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific in WW II. His obituary reads as follows:

PRENTISS, PAUL HOMER, born in Hobart, Indiana May 30,1926, died Little Rock, AR, April 14, 2014, age 87.

His parents, Paul Amos Prentiss and Lacceetta Campbell Prentiss; and his brother, William Prentiss pre-deceased him. He was married in Lafayette, IN nearly 64 years ago to Bonny Rose Oswalt, who survives him. His sister, Margaret Ann Prentiss Droze, of Hanahan, SC, also survives him. Also surviving are his four children, Diana Taylor, Little Rock, AR, Kathleen Schenkelberg, Royal Palm Beach FL, Lorna DePerro, Fowler, CO, and Thomas Prentiss of Holden, LA, his 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He led a wonderful life and was successful at everything he put his hand to. He was a woodworker and could build or fix anything. He loved growing things and planted wonderful flower gardens for his wife. He never met a stranger and had a friendly word for everyone he encountered. He had a sly wit and loved to just sit and visit, especially about trucks. He was a kind-hearted and generous man and never begrudged his wife anything she wanted to buy or any trip she wanted to take. He will be missed by all who knew him, including those who tended to him during his last days in Little Rock.

As a 19 year old machinist first mate in the Navy during WW II, while in the South Pacific, he and a few of his buddies encountered a contingent of Japanese soldiers and their commanding officer who quickly surrendered 10,000 men to the young petty officers, making him a war hero!

He attended Purdue University on the G.I. Bill. During a summer break, Mr. Prentiss began his lifelong career in the trucking industry as a salesman for International Harvester in Lafayette, IN, and was so good at it, he never went back to college.

He soon met and married Bonny Oswalt after asking her married older sister, Irene Swick, if she had any more at home like her! They had planned to elope, but were convinced to get married in the home of Bonny's sister Grace Louise Kalberer in conjunction with a family reunion on August 5th, 1950.

Mr. Prentiss founded Prentiss Truck Sales, Inc. establishing it on the old Highway 52 in Lafayette and prospered for many years as a dealer for Kenworth Trucks, Mack Trucks, Willys Jeeps and Case Equipment. In 1962, he was named dealer of the year by Kenworth and his entire family was flown to Seattle for the convention and the World's Fair. In 1971, he moved to Miami, FL and went to work for International Harvester again and earned their highest award in sales: triple diamond. He worked as a fleet salesman and eventually retired as a manager for the now-named Navistar in 1980. During this time he received a U. S. patent for a product used in the semi- trucking industry.

After retirement, he moved to Dothan, AL because his wife wanted to move "back up north". He worked briefly as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity there. As a hobby, he continued to invent things to help simplify life. He spent most of the last few years caring for his wife. They both moved to Little Rock in 2013. Mr. Prentiss's body was cremated and his ashes will be buried in the family plot in Lafayette, Indiana on Memorial Day weekend, May 25. www.arkansasfuneralcare.com. BONNY ROSE OSWALT PRENTISS, born to Alonzo and Grace Lautzenhiser Oswalt in Wabash, Ind., July 12, 1927, the youngest of nine children, died in Little Rock, Ark., March 15, 2017.

Known for her glamour, intelligence, adventurousness, and singing voice, she was adored by her husband Paul of 62 years, singing to him "What'll I do when you are far away" as he lay dying in 2014.

She attained a BS degree in Home Economics and a MS degree in Institutional Management from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Education in her 50s, while she was living in Miami, Fla. She worked as a college professor for several years, teaching gourmet cuisine and institutional management at Florida International University and Florida State University. She was a master gardener, a registered dietitian, an avid genealogist (tracing the family back to the Norman Conquest), an antiques dealer, a gracious hostess, a member of MENSA, a markswoman, a member of Colonial Dames and D.A.R., and she once sang at Carnegie Hall. She curated her surroundings and wardrobe with an amazing artistic eye, even until her death. Some fondly referred to her as "Miss America" at the nursing home where she spent her last days, because she never went without a coordinated outfit, jewelry, and a scarf or shawl and her iconic red lipstick. Even in a wheelchair, she commanded a certain regal bearing.

She is survived by her four children: Diana Taylor of Little Rock, Kathleen Schenkelberg of Florida, Lorna De Perro of Colorado, and Thomas Prentiss of Louisiana. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and a number of great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements entrusted to A Natural State Funeral Service, Jacksonville, 501-982-3400. Online guestbook is available at www.anaturalstatefuneralservice.com. A graveside service will take place in Indiana at the family burial plot. She was larger than life and will be missed by all.
