Christine Hadden has generously provided us with much information which she located (1) in a posting by Suzanne M. Cornwell on 3 Mar 2000, (2) in the 1900 census, (3) in a city directory, and (4) in a WW II draft registration. It is set out below :
1. Royal Remillard was b. 8 Nov 1892, New Haven, CT (per WW II Draft Registration), and d. 6 Jan 1961, Meriden, New Haven Co., CT, age 69 years. We do not yet have the names of his parents, but we do know from the 1900 census which says that his father was born in Ireland and mother in MA. Suzanne M. Cornwell's posting of 3 Mar 2000 reads, in part, as follows:
- ". . . Royal Remillard [was] b. New Haven?, CT circa 1895. Royal was given up by his
birthparent and raised by [Suzanne's] ggrandparents, Oliver C.Remington and Camilla Prentiss Remington
in Meriden, CT. Although not a blood relative, Royal was surely considered part of [Suzanne/s] family. "
The 1900 census names him "Royal Remalard" (sic), a "Boarder" in the home of Greenleaf A. and Emma L. Prentiss. Greenleaf and Emma are #1(ii) in our Summer 1999 article about "Amasa Prentice of Middletown, Middlesex, CT." and are the parents of Camilla Prentice who m. Oliver C. Remington.
A questionnaire he filled out on 26 Feb 1917 contains the following biographical information: He went by "Royal Remillard," was then single, 25 years old, 5' 6". 145 lbs, had no disabilities, could ride a horse, handle a team, drive an auto and motorcycle, operate electrical machinery, handle a power boat, and could swim.
The 1940 census calls him "Royal Prentiss" and has a small variation in Royal's birth date, showing a birth year of b. c. 1889 in CT. The 1940 census is for Meriden, New Haven Co., CT, where he is shown with his wife, Abbie, He was there shown as a Laborer with an 8th grade education. No children are shown.
We know we are dealing with the same person because a 1945 city directory calls him "Royal Prentice" and shows him living at 56 Crown St., Meriden. A WW II registration names him Royal Prentiss Remillard and shows him living at that same address, 56 Crown St., Meriden.
