1. Monroe Prentice, Black, b. c. 1929, Staten Island, NY. His obituary, with photo, at Google: , reads as follows:

    Monroe Prentiss Jr. joined the U.S Marine Corps in 1946 at the age of 17. World War II had recently come to a close, but his military career would span 21 years though the Korean and Vietnam wars. Prentiss, 84, a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, died last Friday after spending time with his family. He was undergoing medical care for esophagus cancer at Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons. He was considered by his loved ones as a family-oriented man who often had a “gregarious” smile on his face.

    Prentiss was born in Staten Island and grew up in Harlem before joining the Marine Corps. After retiring, he would spend another 25 years living in Jersey City and delivering mail for the U.S Postal Service.

    “My father was very jovial, loving, giving to his family,” said his son, Kenneth Prentiss, who serves as a minister for Miracle Temple Deliverance Church in Jersey City. “He delivered for his community as well as his country.” Kenneth Prentiss said his father often delivered mail to his own community and soon became a staple of his neighborhood.

    Prentiss earned two Purple Hearts, one Silver Star, five Bronze Stars and six conduct medals. In addition, Prentiss was awarded the Patriot of the Year award in 2007 and the Congressional Gold Medal by President Barack Obama. “I definitely think my father was an inspiration for me to join the Army,” added his son, who served in 1971.

    Prentiss is also survived by his wife, Lucy Prentiss, daughter-in-law, Patricia Prentiss, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and 16 great-grandchildren.

    Services for Prentiss will take place at the Miracle Temple Deliverance Church, 160-164 Monticello Ave., Jersey City. The wake will be held tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. and the funeral service will begin at 6 p.m. Prentiss will be interred Monday at 11 a.m. at Brigadier General William C. Doyle-Veteran Memorial Cemetery, 14 Chester Field, Arneytown Rd., in Wrightstown.

    LUCY MAE PRENTISS Lucy Mae Prentiss was born Lucy Mae Stallworth in Beatrice, Alabama on December 9th, 1925 to the Late Eliza and Charles Stallworth. At 5 years old, Lucy moved with her family to Pensacola Florida, she was educated in the Pensacola Public School System. At an early age she was introduced to Christ at the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida. She participated in various youth programs. In 1943, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, Florida. Shortly after she moved to Jersey City, NJ where she resided with her beloved aunt, Tennie Stallworth Wright. She worked in various factories here for 4 years.

    In 1949 she met Monroe Prentiss Jr. who was the 1st African American Marine Recruiter in Jersey City, based in Camp Earle in Redbank, NJ. On December 9, 1951, on her birthday, she married the love of her life, Monroe Prentiss Jr. at the Monumental Baptist Church by Dr. Ercel F. Webb, from that union, a son was born, Kenneth Monroe Prentiss. In 1965 while her husband was stationed overseas, she decided to further her education by enrolling in the Jersey City Medical School of Nursing. In 1988, she retired after 20 years of service, as an LPN with St. Mary's Hospital, Hoboken, NJ. She continued to work as an LPN doing private duty care, specializing in geriatrics. In 1975 Lucy joined Miracle Temple Deliverance Church in Jersey City, NJ, were she was an active member. She later became the Oldest Member of the Church. Lucy Mae Stallworth Prentiss was predeceased by her loving husband Monroe Prentiss Jr. her parents Eliza and Charles Stallworth , a brother John Henry Stallworth, 3 aunts Lucy Stallworth-Ferrell, Johnnie Mae Stallworth,Tennie L. Stallworth-Wright, 2 sister-in-laws; Mary Louise Brown, Barbara Stallworth, 2 dear friends Zarah Stubbs and Beatrice Witherspoon. She leaves to mourn a son Kenneth Monroe Prentiss, a loving daughter-in-law (Patricia)who managed her medical care in the last years of her life, 2 nieces; Gloria Ferrell (Tony) and Stephanie Stallworth-Peagues (Herman), 3 nephews; Joel T. Maul (Carol), David Brown (Debra) and Sean Stallworth, 5 Grandchildren; Kevin Jonathan Prentiss, Angelina Prentiss (Reginald), Joy Prentiss-Albright (Lester), Kenisha Prentiss-McCollum (Christopher) and Jason Prentiss (Natasia), 16 great grandchildren, 1 great-great granchild, 3 special friends; Dorothy Hargrove, Betty McNair, and Phyllis Cuffie. She is also survived by a host of other loving relatives and friends.

    Funeral services are Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 10:00am, at Miracle Temple Deliverance Church, 160 Monticello Ave. Jersey City, NJ. Visitation 8:00 AM until time of service, at the church.
