1. Joseph Prentiss first appears as a 7 year old boy, with any parents, in the 1880 census in New Orleans, Orleans Co., LA, where his race is identified as "Black." Both parents are called also born in LA. He next appears in the 1900, 1910 census in Police Jury Ward 1, St. Bernard, LA. 1920 , 1940 in New Orleans Ward 9, Orleans, LA. 1930 not in census. Joseph and his children are all called Black.
He m. Cecilia, b. c. 1877, LA. She is Black, as are the children:
- Albert Prentiss, b. c. 1897, LA. 1900 at home.
- Oswald Prentiss, b. c. 1899, LA. 1900 at home.
- Melanie B Prentiss, b. c. 1900, LA. 1900 at home.
- Alberti Prentiss, b. c. 1901, LA. 1910 at home.
- Cecile Prentiss, b c, 1902, LA. 1910 at home.
- Joseph Prentiss, b. c. 1903, LA. 1910 at home.
