1. Henry H. Prentiss was b. Mar 1830 in MA according to the 1880 and 1800 census, as were both of his parents. In 1880, 50 years later, he was living with his wife and children in Greenfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts and also in 1900. Curiously, he does not appear in the 1860 or 1870 census.

He m. Eliza D., b. c. 1831 in MA. Children:

  1. Etta E. Prentiss, b. c. 1859, MA. 1880 at home.
  2. Arthur A. Prentiss, b. c. 1869, MA. 1880 at home. 1900 , 1910 in Athol, Worcester Co., MA, with his wife, Mable L., b. c. 1865, MA, and children. Not in 1920 census.
    1. Pauline M. Prentiss, b. Aug 1894, MA. 1900, 1910 at home. Not in 1920 census by that name.
    2. Alice A. Prentiss, b. Oct 1896, MA. 1900 at home. Not in later census by that name.
  3. Herbert H. Prentiss, b. Jun 1870, MA (not to be confused with Herbert O. Prentice, b. c. 1864, MA).

Who are Henry H. Prentiss' Parents?

On his web page at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6120652/person/-1303266684, Fred Printiss shows Henry H. Prentiss as born 11 Mar 1832 in the Pittsfield Hospital, son of Erastus Prentiss and father of Herbert Henry Prentiss, born 3 Jun 1870 in Greenfield, Franklin Co., MA.

In reviewing census records, the the 1880 and 1910 census shows Henry H. Prentiss as born Mar 1830 in MA., but does not specify a specific place of birth in MA, although it does how that 50 years later, in 1880, Henry was living in Greenfield. It would be rather unusual in those days for a person to stay put for 50 years. Note that the "Mar 1830" is 2 years different from 1832. Unfortunately they do not appear in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census.

Now, on a different website at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/22923987/person/1326020727 it shows a Henry Hubbard Prentiss as born 15 Mar 1830 in Auburn, Worcester, MA. He is shown as the son of John Prentiss and Harriet Barton.

One might suggest that the Henry H. Prentiss shown in the 1880 and 1910 census as born Mar 1830, MA, is the same person as Henry Hubbard Prentiss, b. 15 Mar 1830 in Auburn, the son of John Prentiss and Harriet Barton. For now, that is an open question.

We have asked Fred Printiss how he determined that the Henry H. Prentiss, shown in the 1880 and 1910 census as born Mar 1830, is, in fact, the same person as the Henry H. Prentiss Fred Printiss shows as born 11 Mar 1832 in the Pittsfield Hospital. To date we have not received his answer.
