Irma Zephyr Daniels Prentice: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Marshall News Messenger (TX) - Sunday, October 14, 2012 Deceased Name: Irma Zephyr Daniels Prentice

MARSHALL — A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend received healing and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 11, 2012. Irma Zephyr Daniels Prentice caught the wings of an angel and took flight to her new home in heaven. She was born November 28, 1928, in Harrison County, Texas, the third child and only daughter of the late Clarence and Malinda Rosborough Daniels.

Irma can be remembered by the significant loves of her life. Her first love was for the Lord. She accepted Christ at an early age while attending Rock Springs Baptist Church and Galilee Baptist Church No. 2 in Hallsville. She later united with Jerusalem Baptist Church in Marshall, where she served as president of the Angelic Choir. After building her home and moving closer to her parents, she returned to Galilee Baptist Church No. 2, where she was a faithful member, even in failing health. She supported her congregation by overseeing many committees and gave freely of both her time and finances.

With an eloquent and authoritative voice, she was often called upon to serve as mistress of ceremonies at various events. She was a faithful member of the Order of the Eastern Star New Haven Chapter No. 216 in Marshall, Texas. She instilled her faith-filled values in everything she did and everyone she touched.

Her second love was for her family and children. She was married to the late Robert Smith, and to this union three children were born. In June 1961, she married Elmo "Popcorn" Prentice Jr., and they remained married for 35 years until his death. Her family eventually grew to include three children, seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and godchildren, Ray Manning and others.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Graylon; her parents; and brothers, Claude and R.C.; and nephew, James Charles Daniels.

Irma's third love was her passion for education. She completed her early education at Galilee School and graduated from H.B. Pemberton High in 1946 with honors. In 1950, she also graduated with honors from Bishop College, where she majored in English with a minor in Spanish. She completed additional studies at Prairie View A&M University, ETSU (Texas A&M) Commerce, Texas, and Wiley College. She ensured that her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews completed their degrees, providing both moral and financial support. Irma began her teaching career in 1951 as a teacher at Atlas (Galilee) School. She later taught at numerous schools in Marshall ISD, including Red Oak School, Canaan Elementary School, Pemberton High School, Pemberton Junior High School, Price T. Young Middle School and Marshall Junior High School.

After 28 years of teaching, she retired from Marshall ISD in 1982. Being much too active to sit down after retirement, she went back to work as a site manager at Pemberton Nutrition Center. She later worked in the library and business office at Wiley College. As an educator, she was known for her no-nonsense attitude and strict discipline. Her students admired and respected her until this day.

Her fourth love was for her country and community. One of her last acts as a U.S. citizen was to cast her vote for President Barack Obama in the upcoming election. Her vote will count!!

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Joyce Smith-Grissom; step-daughter, Bonita Prince; five grandchildren, Malinda Rayshonda Maxfield, Lonnieshi Daniel'l Grissom-Dollarhide, Ashley Smith, Courtney (Timon) Marshall, Thaddieus (Cynthia) Emory, Bianca (Lomil) Truitt and Whitney Madison-Lindsey; 12¾ great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, DeBorah Madison; sisters-in-law, Esther Daniels, Dorothy Daniels and Velma Prentice-Pryor; one aunt, Mrs. Juanita Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to offer special thanks to Drs. James Logan and Terri Gerber and Nurse Patty from Good Shepherd Medical Center, Longview, Texas; A Complete Approach Home Health Service, Waskom, Texas; Beacon Hospice, Longview, Texas; her special cousin, Ms. Gloria Flanagan; and the Rev. Frank Daniels and The Galilee Baptist Church No. 2 Family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Galilee Baptist Church No. 2 Legacy Fund, c/o J. Newhouse, 2401 Holland St., Marshall, TX 75670.
