We received the information in this article from Keith W. McKenzie's email of 11-11-11 and other sources. 1. James Prentice. Because the children seem to match those shown with his wife in later census records, he may be the "Ja" Prentice shown in the 1841 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1801, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was then living at No. 1 Mua Engine Row Clyde Ironworks and was an "Under Ground Oversman." His wife is shown as "Elizabeth," but that is likely a misreading of the name, "Isabella." He does not appear with his wife in the 1851 and 1861 census and was apparently then deceased.

He m. Isabella Chalmers. She is likely the Isabella Prentice shown in the 1851 census in Fullarton, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1800, Barony, Lanarkshire. She later appears in the 1861 census in Old Monkland, b. c. 1801, Barony, Lanarkshire. Fullarton, Old Monkland and Barony eventually were incorporated into Glasgow.

James and Isabella had children, including:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1826, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 census in Old Monkland. 1851 not home.
  2. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1831, Old Monkland. At home in 1841 census in Old Monkland. 1851 not home.
  3. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1832, Barony, Lanarkshire. At home in 1851 census.
  4. Isabella Prentice, b. c. 1834, Barony, Lanarkshire. At home in 1851 census.
  5. Jean Prentice, b. c. 1837, Lanarkshire. 1841 at home in Old Monkland. 1851 not home.
  6. George Prentice, b. c. 1839, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. He appears in the 1851 Fullarton, Old Monkland Parish, with his mother and siblings. In 1861 Old Monkland with his mother, Isabella, and brother James.
  7. James Prentice, b. c. 1842, Old Monkland, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. James Prentice, b. c. 1842, He is likely the James Prentice, b. c. 1842, Old Monkland, son of Isabella, shown in the 1851 census in Fullarton, Old Monkland Civil Parish, Lanarkshire, and in the 1861 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 1911 in Birkenhead, Cheshire and called a widower (per Keith McKensie, email, 12 Nov 2011).

He m. Mary Smith on 30 Jan1868 in Bathgate, West Lothian . She was b. 23 Apr 1847, Bathgate, and may have d. in 1906. She was the dau. of William Smith and Mary Chapman. Although only a guess for now, Mary Smith may be the Mary Smith shown in the 1851 census in Boness, West Lothian, as b. c. 1848 in Perthsire, dau. of William and Mary Smith. We note that in 1871, 3 years after Mary's 1868 marriage in Bathgate, West Lothian, Mary's parents were living in Bathgate, West Lothian. James and Mary appear in the 1881 census in Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales, where he is an "Agent (Railway Contractor)".

James Prentice and Mary Smith had 5 children (per Keith McKenzie, email, 11 & 12 Nov 2011), including, per the 1881 Wales census:

  1. Mary Prentice, b. 7 Feb 1869, Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, per IGI.
  2. James Prentice, b. 9 Nov 1870, Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. per IGI.
  3. Isabella Chalmers Prentice, b. 16 Dec 1872, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. 1911 census at home in Birkenhead, Cheshire (per Keith McKenzie, above).
  4. William Smith Prentice, b. 3 Jan 1879 Sheffield, England. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  5. (child) Prentice per Keith McKenzie, email, 12 Nov 2011.

She was the dau. of George Turnbull and Janet Govan.Their children included , and registered with the British Consul in Chile (per Keith McKenzie, email, 12 Nov 2011):

    1. (son) Back, b. 23 Feb 1942.
  4. James Archibald Prentice, b. 1917.
  5. Lynette Prentice, b. 1920.

Who are James Prentice's Parents?

James Prentice, chr. 18 May 1800, Cambusnethan, son of Robert Prentice and Catharine Man, is #1(vii)(e) in our Winter 2005 article entitled James Prentice of Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland . There seems to be a good chance that he is the James Prentice who is #1, above, in our article.

In searching our database of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, christening records, we found the following additional possibilities:

  1. James Prentice, chr. 11 Sep 1795, Cambusnethan, son of Archibald Prentice and Jean McNaught.
  2. James Prentice, chr. 18 Aug 1797, Livingston, son of George Prentice and Isabel Booth.
  3. James Prentice, chr. 25 Nov 1798, Carstairs, son of William Prentice and Grizal Alexander.
  4. James Prentice, chr. 10 Nov 1799, Carnwath, son of Thomas Prentice and Helen Howison.
  5. James Prentice, chr. 30 Jun 1799, Dalziel, son of Robert Prentice and Isabell Brican.
  6. James Prentice, chr. 2 Aug 1801, Crawfordjohn, son of James Prentice and Margaret Milligan.

Investigation is continuing.
