1. William Prentice was b. Oct 1830, Scotland, per 1900 census, but see listing immediately below: his birth year is unclear and was somewhere between about 1822 and 1830:

  • The 1860 Bay City, MI, census calls him "____ Prentiss" and says he was b. c. 1826, Scotland.
  • Not in 1870 census.
  • The 1880 Bay City, MI, census says he was b. c. 1822, Scotland.
  • The 1900 Bay City, MI, census says he was b. Oct 1830 in Scotland. Widowed.

He had emigrated from Scotland to PA where his son, William, was b. c. 1857. By the following year, 1858, he had moved to MI, where his daughter, Jennett, was born.

He m. Mary who was b. c, 1830 (per 1860 census) or 1832 (per 1880 census), Scotland. Known children:

He appears in the 1900 Bay City, MI census with his wife and family. He later appears in the 1910 Bay City census, indexed as "John Crentrce", with his wife and family. Not in 1920 census where his wife is shown as married.

He m. Catherine "Kate" in 1889. She was b. Mar 1867 in MI, with her father b. in England and mother in MA. Living with her dau., Loretta, in the 1920 Bay City, MI, census. Living with the family of her son, Edward, in the 1930 census in Bangor, Bay Co., MI. They had 4 or more children, including:

  1. William Prentice, b. Mar 1890, MI. At home in 1900 and 1910. Not in 1930 census. It is unclear whether he is the William J. Prentice shown in the 1920 census in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN, as b. c. 1889, MI, with both parents b. in MI, and with his wife, Maude F., b. c. 1890, MI, and son:

5. Edward John Prentice Jr., was b. c. 1930 in Bay City, MI and d. 12 Feb 2000 at Baptist Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. He had been employed by the F.A.A. His obituary in the Kansas City Star of 14 Feb 2000 reads as follows:

    Kansas City Star, The (MO) - Monday, February 14, 2000: EDWARD JOHN PRENTICE

    Edward John Prentice, 70, Kansas City, MO, died February 12, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. Mr. Prentice was born in Bay City, MI. He retired from the F.A.A. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, June, Kansas City, MO; son, Ronald, Florida; siblings, Loretta Dunning, Arizona, Katie Warmbier, Michigan, and William Prentice, Montana.

    Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel Funeral Home. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. (Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel, 6600 N. Antioch Rd., Gladstone, MO 64119)

Edward m. June, c. 1954 and had at least one son:

  • Ronald Prentice who lives in Florida.

Who is William Prentice's Father?

Although the census record seems to indicate a different birth year, that William Prentice may be the same person as Unknown Prentiss who appears in our Winter 2002 issue.
