Introduction: Since publishing this article in our Spring 2009 Prentice Newsletter, we have received additonal information from Thomas R. Prentice. We have added new information about Walter Benton Prentice's family tree and have renumbered the folks in the article.

1. William Prentice. His birth date is not yet known, but may have been c. 1845-1865. By email of 24 May 2009, Thomas R. Prentice, a great-grandson, relates that William drank and that one night, on the way home from a pub, he was murdered and found in a culvert.

2. Walter Prentice, b. 10 Jun 1886, Perryville, Madison Co., NY and d. 20 Aug 1946, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI. He was a jack of all trades and machines would run better if he was in the same room. He fought in WW1 in the signal corps and saw active combat in France. He was wounded in the hand and gassed -poison gas first used in WW1. Also in a punch press accident he lost 5 fingers: 2 on one hand and 3 on the other hand. He had trouble in the depression getting a job because of his inability to get a birth certificate and his injury. In 1924 Walter and his family moved from Fayetteville, NY, to Detroit, MI. 1940 in E. Detroit.

He m. Ruth Elizabeth Howell. She was b. 22 Dec 1897 Syracuse, NY, and d. 16 Jul 1992 at age 94 years. She was the dau. of Benton "Bert" Howell and Florence.

Thomas R. Prentice's email of 24 May 2009 relates that Ruth attended High School in Fayetteville, Onondaga Co., NY and that she had siblings: Tom, Paul and Marge Howell, all of whom were deceased by 2009. Both Tom & Paul were in the service during WW II, Paul (from Oneida NY) was in the Marines and served in the South Pacific. Tom Howell has a daughter, who is probably in her 60's.

  3. Jane/Jenny Prentice, b. c. 1920. 8 Oct 1922, she d. of pneumonia at 2 years of age.

3. Walter Benton Prentice, b. 1929, MI, and d. 1 May 2013, Heisinger Bluffss, Jefferson City, Hemet, CA.

In 2009 Walter was a retired Neuro Radiologist living in Hemet, CA. Thomas R Prentice's email of 24 May 2009 advises that they lived in Lafayetteville,Onondaga Co., NY. Walter Benton Prentice does not appear in the 1920 or 1930 census, nor does he appear in the 2009 SSDI. He first appears in Ancestry.com as the father of Mary Clare Prentice who was b. 21 Aug 1957 in Ramsey Co., MN.

    His Academic Appointments include: 1969 Instructor, Dept. of Radiology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, 1971 Asisstant Professor, Dept. of Radiology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis 1972 Assistant Professor, Dept. of Radiological Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Tulsa 1978 Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept. of Radiological Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Tulsa 1985 Assistant Professor, Dept. of Radiology, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, Calif.

    Dr. Prentice was licensed in the following states: Ark., Calif., Iowa, Kan., Minn., N.D., Okla., and Wis.

    His Military Service included: Minnesota Army National Guard 1962-69 GMO, HHC 47th Infantry Division CPT 1970-MAJ with the Co A, 204th Med. Bn.

    He is survived by: one sister: Betty Murphy of Minnesota; ex-wives: Charlotte Prentice of Minnesota and Rose Prentice of Oklahoma; children with Charlotte: Thomas Prentice of Minnesota and his wife Carrie Berg, John Scott Prentice of California and his wife Imelda "Mel" Prentice, and Patricia Edel and son-in-law Alan Edel of Minnesota; children with Rose: (from her prior marriage with Mr. Higgins): Michael Prentice of Oklahoma and his wife Paula Prentice and Steve Prentice and his wife Shaunna Prentice of Nevada; children with Rose: Jennifer Whitacre and son-in-law Shane Whitacre of Missouri; grandchildren: Christine and Cynthia Prentice (children of Thomas), Mitchell and Lorraine Prentice (children of John Scott), May and Maggie Edel (children of Pattie), Christopher, Crystal, and Cody Prentice (children of Michael), Stephanie Prentice (children of Steve), Kirsten, Shaylie, Brayden, and Auguste Whitacre (children of Jennifer); great-grandchildren: Layla Ziebert-Knouse and Seth Prentice (children of Stephanie).

    He was preceded in death by a sister: Jane Prentice (October 8, 1922); child: Mary Claire Prentice on June 24, 1964 (with Charlotte); grandchild: Justin Prentice on October 19, 2003 (child of Steve), great-grandchild: Lana Ziebert on March 17, 2007 (child of Stephanie); and spouse: Janis Gero Prentice on March, 2012.

    There will be no visitation or memorial service. Educational memorial scholarship is suggested to the Missouri National Guard Association Office.
